Getting started to contibution.

Hi, I am new to opens source contribution and i learnt about metalink from http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/FOSS_Mentor_Projects where some open source projects are listed that are mentoring students for open source contribution.Can someone help me in taking first steps in open source world.
