Hello Metal3 community!

There was an initiative proposed on the May 21st Community Meeting to maintain Metal3 helm charts upstream. (Meeting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PGRqaIEjeE)

We have a volunteer and also an adopting organization who would be willing to maintain the charts.

The initial idea is to reach out to projects/organizations that are already maintaining charts and discuss with representatives of those projects/organizations about the possibility of upstreaming helm charts.

If possible, we would like to avoid re-inventing the charts from zero but that is a fallback option too.

AFAIK there are two major projects/orgs that are maintaining Metal3 helm charts, one is Orange with the Sylva/Kanod project and other is SUSE with the SUSE Edge project.

I would like to invite contributors who also work with the above-mentioned orgs to join this e-mail thread and let's start discussing upstream Helm chart initiative. I have taken the liberty and also sent this mail directly to those who I know working in the above mentioned two projects and are also contributors of Metal3.

BR,
Adam

Hello Adam, Thomas and community,

Thank you, Adam, Thomas, for bringing the charts issue to everyone's attention.

It appears that SUSE's Helm charts have become the de facto standard Metal3 Helm Charts without being officially recognized. I'm hoping SUSE might consider either donating them to the Metal3 community or giving explicit approval for using them as the foundation for new community charts.

I'd welcome other perspectives on this topic.

Regards,
Serhii

Hello Adam,

The idea of having a metal3 Helm chart maintained by the community at large certainly makes sense.

To help set a clear picture of the landscape:

What we can say is that from Sylva standpoint the Metal3 chart maintained by Suse is a very good starting point. Whether this could become a chart used and maintained by a larger community is not for us to say, it more depends on how much Suse team would like to follow this path, and how much others would be willing to adopt.

Cheers,

-Thomas
