DC-Reg TG report 2009
Our past agenda was:
* Develop a set of functional requirements common to current registries, based on the experience and findings of current registry implementers and stakeholders. As part of this, investigate the dissemination functionality considered desirable in a registry, and appropriate use cases associated with this functionality; common requirements
* Draft a set of use cases for inter-registry interactions, taking into consideration interoperability concerns (reporting, notification, versioning, etc.) between registries and other applications sharing related goals; inter-registry use cases
* Draft a set of functional requirements related to the inter-registry transfer language or languages, including interoperability concerns related to sharing information between registries and with other applications such as vocabulary management applications that share related aims.
We have more or less achieved all of these, at least in the short term; I think we have reached the point where we know where and when these questions cannot be easily answered, and have a better understanding of the full complexities of our agenda, particularly the inter-registry transfer problem, which has been very helpful for us in locating 'low-hanging fruit' in terms of interoperability. The use case work in particular has been very useful for us, and has been greatly improved by Corey Harper's work in creating and administrating a survey designed to explore viewpoints regarding topics 1 and 2 in the agenda above.
We do need to publish our results and have not yet done so, but we are in the process of assembling our findings, hence this point has been moved to the coming year's work plan. In particular, Corey Harper is putting together the results from a survey that was held earlier this year. In parallel to this we also intend to report back to the community on the findings of the DC-Registry TG meeting, a limited-scale event held in York in the early summer of this year.
Work plan 2009-2010
At present we are looking at the following future actions:
1: Publication and feedback solicited regarding the metadata registry survey completed by Corey Harper, and of the points raised at the closed event in York regarding metadata registry interoperability and practical structure. This information is regarded as a seed for further discussion.
2. Fulfilling practical use cases, including those brought up in the York event and any others suggested from the mailing list, using functional if bare-bones inter-registry transform tools such as (http://iemsr.baiji.ukoln.ac.uk/transformationService/). This work will be achieved mostly via the IEMSR Phase IV funding, and is therefore intentionally limited to the pragmatically achievable given the resources available to us.
3. Examining the longer-term future for inter-registry interoperability – exploring ideas, particularly the scenario contributed by Diane Hillmann and Jon Phipps at the recent York event (it is hoped that this presentation can be republished online in time for the Registry event in Korea).
4. Taking a closer look at SKOS and other relevant standards – updating our understanding of the current state of the art in this area.
5. Developing and maintaining a registry of registries to facilitate data reuse – following the trend described in point 2, this is intended to be cheap and minimally complex, ie. a list containing just enough information to facilitate reuse or distributed access.
This work plan is expected to be completed in autumn 2010.

Emma
