Exciting Updates on the Meta-Layer Initiative and Next Steps

I hope this email finds you well and energized for the year ahead. As we continue to explore and build toward the vision of the meta-layer, I wanted to share some important updates and thoughts on how we move forward in light of recent developments.
Over the past few months, the rapid emergence of agentic AI has compelled me to rethink how we approach this work. While the application substrate remains our primary goal, we now see a significant opportunity—and necessity—to integrate agentic AI within the meta-layer. Not only can these tools boost productivity and streamline development, but they also serve as a critical layer of protection against malicious agents, a challenge we must anticipate.
We’ve also been struck by how AI and blockchain complement each other in addressing major challenges in the web ecosystem. As we look to build the meta-layer, the convergence of these technologies feels increasingly vital to our approach.
One of the key insights is that we can use agentic AI not just within the meta-layer substrate but also to accelerate the development of the meta-layer itself. From social media and community building to commentary synthesis and technical progress, these tools can help us move faster and more effectively. With this in mind, we’ve begun researching and scoping out ways to build agents that will take on many aspects of the project.
Updated Timeline and Process for the Meta-Layer Initiative
We are still on track to gather and synthesize input on the six categories of desirable properties for the meta-layer by June 30, 2025. However, instead of producing monthly updates as originally envisioned, our Q1 focus will shift toward developing agents that can take over key tasks as soon as possible. These agents will eventually handle:
- Social media promotion
- Commentary acquisition and organization
- Synthesis of input
- Drafting the final report
Of course, we believe in a "human-in-the-loop" model, so our team will remain closely involved to guide, adjust, and approve as needed. This hybrid approach will allow us to leverage AI's speed and scalability without sacrificing the thoughtful human oversight that this project demands.
Bitcoin “Satplication” Update
I’m also excited to share progress on the Bitcoin application—or “satplication”—for the Call for Input. This tool immortalizes commentary on the meta-layer from PCI emails and other venues. You can view it here: https://www.ord.io/81795604.
Currently, the application displays 37 posts, all 100% on-chain, ensuring permissionless access and future-proofing the content. The system is also highly replicable: we can easily create similar applications for other projects at a low cost (around $20 for two inscribed files). This opens up exciting possibilities for preserving and sharing valuable input in a decentralized and enduring way.

Invitation: AI Day SF
I’m also happy to share that I’ve recently joined the board of the San Francisco Bay Chapter of the Internet Society. As part of this role, I want to invite you to AI Day SF on February 6, 2025, at the Google Community Space in San Francisco.
This event, co-hosted by the Internet Society and the Association for Computing Machinery, will provide hands-on training with modern AI tools and feature thought leadership from experts across medicine, law, technology, commerce, society, and academia. It’s an excellent opportunity to engage directly with AI’s transformative potential across various sectors.

Final Thoughts
