A quick update from my side on this weekend:
The boys made some terrific progress this weekend. After just 6 practices, and only 1 as a complete squad they performed admirably on Saturday against an older, more experienced and larger MA All Star team. After being under some pressure in the set piece and down 10-5 just before half time, we came back with a 90 meter blistering run by Jovanny Perez, but unfortunately he placed the ball down outside the in goal area (confusion with playing on a Football field). No try. MA scored again but our boys showed great composure and rallied. The set piece improved dramatically as did the reduced penalty count and discipline. The lads shows tremendous tenacity in defense, literally driving the opposition back multiple times around the fringes and putting some great pressure on their back line with solid line speed. Down 24-10 we came back in the last 10 minutes to salvage an excellent multi phase pressure-penalty (3 points) and a subsequent multi-phases from our 22 to theirs for a try (24-18). With just 4 minutes to go we battled in their 22 with 3 possession changes battering their line but were unable to get over for the all important try give us the opportunity to win.
On Sunday, the lads were simply fantastic. Other than 10 minutes in the first half when we lost our shape due in part to dominating the match, we re-gained our composure and began to dominate every aspect of play. Our set piece dominated, our defense with huge (some cringe-worthy tackles) and some tremendous go-forward and continuity between forwards and backs, led to a 12-try bonanza. Importantly, we defended our line proudly on a number of occasions and conceded zero points.
There were a number of stand-out performances. In fact, no-one had a bad game on Sunday. Throughout the weekend however, Jovanny Perez consistently showed off his blistering pace, Austin Wolf showed solid physical dominance in both attack and defense, Akram Shata showed excellent technique in set piece, was active around the field and even kicked about 7 goals throughout the weekend! In the backs, Onye Onwukanjo made some bone-shaking tackles throughout the weekend and Brian Sussingham carved up the defense on a number of occasions. Luis Carpio was MVP for the last game and absolutely dominated on multiple attacking runs for literally hundreds of yards (and a try or 2). Connor Sweet as Captain was the weekend's MVP and truly led from the front on and off the field. He is a talented 4/5/6. Cale Williams was awarded the "Spirit of Rugby" award, as our youngest (14 years) but one of our most talented and composed players. At scrum half he has a lot of potential for the future. Many others performed really well and many with limited experience. Given we had a very young squad it all bodes well for the future. Importantly, they've all become mates throughout this 4 weeks process and this camaraderie was only strengthened throughout the weekend.
We are looking forward to getting the squad together again next month, in preparation for a summer match against a touring side from the UK (more to come). From there, we plan on playing a match quarterly to keep them together. All players will be invited to join the Play Rugby USA Academy, which will be running monthly player development camps throughout the year to help the players with skill development, strength, conditioning, nutrition and vocational training.
Thanks to Chris Venn, Marty Veale, Dominic Wareing, Neil McMillan, Dallen Stanford & Leo Purtill (a plethora of Northern and Southern Hemisphere "funny talkers") for their assistance with trainings and to Jerry Wolf for touch-judging both matches and assisting throughout the weekend. Also, to Gary Heavner and Ali Nazir for coordinating with the girls. Lastly, to NY SBRO, NJ SBRO, NYRC & Old Blue which along with PRUSA were able to underwrite the costs for the weekend and subsidize a number of player spots to make it an inclusive and affordable opportunity for all.
Best,
Mark Griffin
