We know from Phoenix's past that he can be in relationship with women, (or well at least), but maya not showing any romantic feelings instead she had a childish attitude and personality when she's with Phoenix and that what I think that made most fans think that they have a Brother/Sister relationship or maybe have some another reasons or it's just that their problem that they just don't believe it, that's my opinion anyway,
Now Let's just talk about Maya's personality, maya is showing that she doesn't care much about Romance and instead she talks about food and jokes and sometimes teases with Phoenix, we can realize that in SoJ's DLC Case "Turnabout Time Traveler", a case that that'd make you think about romance and love and etc, the things that Maya doesn't care about anyway, you can replace her with Iris (nick's former girlfriend) and maybe you'll have lovely talking with each other, and if you're Phoenix/Miles shipper then you'll realize that Miles know better about Romance and will make the same idea with Phoenix like iris,
But all that made Maya stronger and would force her to be mature to the people she talks to, and that what happened many times and we ourselves can confirm that, so maya without childish happy attitude won't make her the Maya we know and Phoenix himself said that, the players can see her that she's vey cheer and happy all time but maybe from inside there's something different and maybe dark,
Trucy is the second to make the idea of Phoenix have a love interest in his life when she was mentioning about "Mommy" but that was one line and we know that her biological mother still alive but that doesn't mean that she could leave her father and also her having 18 years old won't change that, this is thing that the writers have to do not us, now she didn't mention anything that could make us think of maya but at least the idea of Phoenix have a partner in his life,
Now about Athena she maybe didn't gave the idea to Phoenix like the others but in SoJ's prologue when she shyly ask Phoenix about maya we apparently could say that she was able to read Phoenix's emotions towards maya, specially when you think about it when you see the Blossom tree and we all know what that does mean, there's also thing that it may not look like that's a big visible evidence but in the Episode "Turnabout Revolution" in its first half we can maybe see what it looks like she can feel about Phoenix's emotions in the recess when she returned after she tried to spying on Phoenix and after Apollo was close to defeat Phoenix and He was acted like what its looks like depressed she explains the situation to Apollo that maya was once again kidnaped (which is the same to "Farwell my Turnabout") and she is showing the players the same expression when she returned in the recress maybe because she had read Phoenix's emotions Or maybe not but either that we know that she The only one have the key to read what's inside Phoenix's heart,
But now let's talk about Phoenix's attitude that we can realize when see him investigate in crime scene he picks at least the closest person that would make Him feel better let's start as an example Ema Skye in Episode "Rise from the ashes" we see Phoenix not working at all for some months after Maya left to the village until he saw Ema that actually the reason that he take her case because she reminded him of Maya and Ema skye is a character that "shu Takumi" (the series creator) designed her to be based on maya with a different personality, but the important thing here that Phoenix took her case because she reminded him of her and that something we can't deny anyway at least to me,
In the second DLC Episode "Turnabout Time Traveler" after maya finally returned he can choose her know Right? Well she came by herself but in un expected way and how this game want us to think!?, well the game made an excuse for her to be the partner with Phoenix anyway but know does Phoenix needs another little help, oh there's Athena the one who Phoenix chose her last time instead of Apollo, but wait why does Phoenix refused her help this time like With Apollo and what was the excuse this time? Trucy? Okay then So Trucy what do think about Phoenix/Maya relationship? oh well you're busy working with Athena, that's okay you barley talk to us anyway specially when the person who your Daddy with was someone we barely see her talk to you, but anyway Athena left behind just the same case with Apollo, so did Phoenix really choose the one who prefer to be with him or this is just a Copy Paste from the previous DLC well maybe but this is just getting creepier when you think about it,
Maya herself promised her villagers to be the Kurain Master and to be like her mother which also means to continuing her bloodline, she are close from her early 30s maybe she'd take even more or maybe not, she can be replaced by pearl, but I highly doubt that possiblity, specially when you think that pearl has to do the same things that maya would take years to complete,
Now when you think who she'll marry, you probably would hardly think that she'd marry anyone other than Phoenix, specially the person who saved her many times and known her for almost the half of their lifes, its already too late to thinking that they'd add someone maya would interest in him that easily because that'd be dumb move from them to change her character and personality that easily, just think they could've make her have someone else when she was in Khura'in but they didn't and even if they did that would be a dumb reason too, just think about it,
I see fan art of it, but I never hear anyone say 'I ship Nick and Maya' to be fair other than Pearl in JFA its never really implied (well definitely less than Nick and Miles} also the age gap always seemed weird to me, and maya being 17... I know it age of consent is 13 in japan but, still 7 year difference is weird to me.
Edit: Alot of people are saying that seems to be what was intended it the OG trilogy, and I think maybe after AA when they realized Nick and Miles were pretty gay, I agree, this wasn't on purpose hell phoenix has a couple lines that could be taken as homophobic in sisters. But people still shipped the two, so they added the special someone stuff to push that to the side. and later added dahlia/Iris in TT which if the games ended with Trilogy would of been fine. but since the games went on they kind of started caring less about making him look straight and just include less gay moments, mainly with Edgeworth appearing less. Lets not forget that there was probably a retcon between AA and TT Since he acts like he was never the defendent in sisters and him nor mia ever mention his earlier trial
