Interesting perspective indeed. I think the diesel manual wagon, the one revered on this site anyway, is an enthusiasts dream, not in the "exciting to drive" sense but more in the ultra academic perfect car sense. Actually it's revered for the same reasons Europeans like them but don't tell any one here ;-)Also, it should be brown and AWD because the Jetta Sport wagon TDI (FWD only) is for sale in the US.

A very interesting perspective, but it doesn't diminish my love for diesels at all. I've owned 4 of them, two VW Rabbits, a GM 6.2L V8 and my current Cummins. Obviously, the "agricultural" sound doesn't bother me.I spent two weeks vacationing in Germany in 2007. We rented a Mondeo sedan with the turbodiesel and 5-speed stick for 1 week and I thought it was excellent. Not so impressed with the Opel diesel-stick we rented for the second week though. We were shopping for a vehicle for my wife in 2010 to replace her 2001 Civic. Had heard rumors of Honda bringing an Accord wagon to North America, possibly with a diesel. Instead they presented the Crosstour. I voted with my wallet and bought an off-lease 2006 CR-V with the 5-speed.

The fourth generation of the Mondeo received an ample facelift in 2019. It wasn't only for the looks but for the technological part as well. Due to its cavernous trunk space, the station-wagon version was one of the roomiest cars in its class.

The exterior of the car featured a new trapezoidal grille shape with a 3D effect. For the Titanium trim levels, it featured horizontal chrome slats. The lower apron featured a new grille as well and new fog lights. For the ST version, smaller winglets were added on the sides. In the back, the C-shaped taillights were intersected by a stylish, trim in satin silver or chrome, depending on the car's version.

Inside, the customers had a long options list to chose from and to select the interior's look. From different trims to different infotainment systems and instrument cluster. The base version was fitted with a combination of analog and digital display. The seats were comfortable and also offered in a few upholstery and comfort levels, but the split-fold rear seats were fitted as standard.

Under the hood, the Mondeo station-wagon was offered with a wide choice of diesel, gasoline, and hybrid versions. Depending on the powering option, the car was fitted with a 6-speed manual, a CVT, or an 8-speed automatic. An all-wheel-drive version was on the list as well.

Inside, the wagon is extremely spacious. The car is 4,867 mm in length, which means there is more than 525 litres of boot space (1,630 litres with the seats folded down). Space like this makes it a good family car. The problem I always had with saloons was that there was never enough height in the boot, but with estate cars, height is not an issue.

But those I could live with. Stuff I struggled with was the fact that during winter, the opening mechanism in the doors would freeze in a noose somewhere inside the door (from what I could read online). In cold weather the windows would also freeze stuck around the edge. So you would sit inside the car in the morning wanting to get out. Then you would pull the door handle to no effect, and then the fix would typically be to roll the window down and use the outside door handle. But the window would be stuck, and guess what: so would you. That is just an inexcusably poor and dangerous design.

So long story short, I grew weary of it. We paid 59,000 DKK for it (about 8,500 USD) and it looked really nice, so it was good enough that I needed to take care of it. But since I did not love it, I did not really want to. At this price point, not taking care of it would mean throwing too much money away, but taking good care of it would not necessarily be justified by its value. I needed to solve that paradox.

A lowered suspension and maybe big 20 inch (or more) wheels with thin rim protector tires makes a vehicle an easy target for very expensive damage, mostly from post-winter pot holes, but also from (as you mentioned) speed bumps and various steep driveway entry and exit aprons.

We have our absurd CAFE regulatory scheme to blame for the disappearance of truly compact pickups and affordable wagons in the US, the boom in SUVs/CUVs as their effective successors, and why the few wagons we do still get tend to be from upscale marques that can justify the price premium covering their CAFE penalty:

With a full day of R&R behind us, we repacked the wagon and headed for home. We kept to the less windy roads on the return trip and engaged the cruise control on the highway, a great way to end the day.

Only the front and rear ends are covered in camouflage, suggesting those areas will be the ones to see changes. Expect a new bumper at the front as well as subtle changes to the tailgate and taillights.

The latter looks very similar to the one used in the latest Ford Focus, leading us to believe the Mondeo prototype uses the same eight-speed automatic transmission as the compact model. Since Ford has announced in October that the updated Mondeo Hybrid family will gain a wagon version in 2019, this might be just it.

Along with the updated hybrid powertrain, the facelifted 2019 Mondeo family is expected to gain new EcoBlue 2.0-liter turbo diesel and EcoBoost 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engines borrowed from the 2019 Focus.

The Mondeo will also get the Co-Pilot360 safety pack consisting of adaptive cruise control, active parking assist, evasive steering assist, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

Your impressions when looking at, getting in, and driving an unusual classic or sports car, are strong and distinctive. The value the design delivers is clear to see - the peaks and troughs of consuming the design are explicit.

With a car such as the new Ford Mondeo the peaks are lower, and the troughs are shallower. This has to be the case; it is a mass market large family car, a car that will be used throughout Europe by a broad range of user for the everyday roles demanded of most 'normal' modern cars.

But the design of this Mondeo is interesting because of this, not despite this. The core challenge for the Ford design team was how to balance delivering a distinctively engaging design with being acceptable to as much as possible of the broad target profile of potential buyer. This is perhaps the biggest unspoken challenge for today's vehicle designer.

We had a week with a top of the range, fully loaded, Mondeo wagon (there are sedan and a hatchback variants also). The wagon version was the first of this third generation Mondeo to have been previewed by the Ford Mondeo Wagon concept at the 2006 Paris Auto Show as it is the largest selling variant in the mainstream brand upper medium European market sector - and perhaps also because it is the most attractive variant.

There are two strong impressions that the Mondeo makes. The first is in its form; a large, handsome, dynamic estate car, with a notably assertive demeanor. Our car in particular - with its large 'son of Iosis' alloy wheels, light metallic finish and privacy glass - had a keenness that suited its aggressive DRG and dynamic form language. Through its exterior design, the Mondeo proves how successful Martin Smith's 'Kinetic Design' form language is in making an ostensively prosaic type of car adopt so much 'attitude'; our Mondeo was universally recognized as making a distinctive and appealing statement, and the CDN team were unanimous in thinking its proportions balanced and its surfacing faultless.

After the 'shaking hands' experience of opening the doors - a slight amount of 'stiction' adding to the low rent feel of the large square-ish section lightweight door handles - the interior makes the second impression. Like the exterior, it is faithful in theme to the Iosis concept. But relative to competitors such as the Renault Laguna, Citroen C5, and premium brand upper-medium designs, it lacks an apparent depth of consideration - there are no clever or subtly finessed details. Initially this doesn't matter so much, the Mondeo is commodious and comfortable, and its driving performance is exemplary - in particular its ride, handling and refinement mix. But after a week with the car you begin to resent that Ford has failed to put any God into the details of the Mondeo; it feels like a car designed quickly and with a focus on showroom appeal, not on fostering a strong relationship with its users.
