Swat Refugees Cry for Food, Shelter‏

 

We appeal to all the communities in the WORLD to donate generously for the IDPs who are suffering because of a lack of shelter and are in dire need of food, clothes and medicine," said Qazi Abid Sohrab, Chairman of the New Creative Helping Hand In Pakistan.

Children line up to receive food in a refugee camp near Mardan, in northwest Pakistan, Saturday, May 9, 2009. Hundreds of thousands of residents have fled fighting in the northwestern Swat Valley area after a new military offensive began against Taliban militants.

 

At least 360,000 people have already left their homes in recent days since the military operation was launched to flush out militants from the Swat Valley and in all about 500,000 are expected to flee the conflict zone in coming days. Some 600,000 people have earlier been displaced from Swat and other areas because of fighting since August.

 

The Pakistan government expects the number will increase to around 1.5 million, making it one of the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world.

 

"The IDPs are coming to the camps which are not enough to accommodate them. They are badly managed and there is also a shortage of food and medicines," said Qazi Abid Sohrab.

 

He especially requested the Pakistani community to donate generously.

"We are planning to set up our own camp in the affected areas to help people and distribute relief goods," he said.

He added that the relief camp would not accept old clothes.
