THE DESIRE OF THE AFFLICTED (from the book Everyday wiser by Pastor Alejandro Bullon - reproduced with permission from the Inter-American Division Publishing Association) #reflections

You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,. Psalms 10:17.

Psalms 9 and 10 complement each other. In Psalm 9 the people of God face the dangers that come from neighboring nations, while in Psalm 10, the dangers and pressures that the people go through come from within. Did you realize that many times the greatest enemies are very close to you?
In this psalm, superb people mistreat and humiliate their brothers. The psalmist refers to those who fear the Lord and walk in their ways as the "humble." Humility is needed to recognize the limits of the creature and accept divine advice.
Try to walk in God's ways among people who mock and play with sacred things, and you will see that many times they will make you feel ridiculous and obsolete. Your respect for divine values and principles will make people often make fun of your way of facing life. In those circumstances it is when the Christian needs to pay attention to today's text. The psalmist affirms that God does two things with the humble: He listens to them and strengthens them.
If you were ever stuck in an elevator, you know how good it is for someone to hear your screams. Or if you were ever assaulted, you know how you would have liked someone to listen to you and go to your aid. In today's Psalm, God promises to hear your cry when you feel pressured by the criticism of those who do not fear the Lord.
Not only that, but He promises to strengthen you. God does not come to take your place. He does not want fragile children, weak and unable to face the dangers. He strengthens them. Sharpen your ideas. Put the necessary arguments on your lips. He stimulates you to face the dangers and pressures. And when the ravages of life are stronger than you, God promises to help you, take you in His arms like a wounded bird, ready to be destroyed by the predator, and take you to the other side of the mountain where He will heal your wounds. Is not it wonderful? Therefore, the apostle Paul asks: "If God is with us, who is against us?"
Today you have a day of victories ahead. But, if you look through the window of life, and see the dark horizon, do not despair, trust the promise: "You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry."
