Political activists will be gathering at the University of Utah Friday
evening February 8 and Saturday February 9 for films, guest speakers,
activist panels, a variety of workshops and discussions on shaping
"the progressive agenda for 2008." The conference is anchored around
three topics: U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq, global warming and
the environment, and national single-payer healthcare reform.
The Friday evening segment on the Iraq war features the 7pm Utah
premiere screening of "Meeting Resistance" with filmmakers Molly
Bingham and Steve Connors present to discuss their film. A brief
panel on "Americans in Iraq" with Iraq war veterans Chris Conway and
Jeff Key and Mormon peace activist William Van Wagenen starts things
off at 6:30. A Utah edition of the Eyes Wide Open exhibit
<
www.afsc.org/eyes/> will be in the OSH auditorium lobby throughout
the conference to help us concentrate on ending U.S. war in the Middle
East.
Saturday morning begins with screening "An Inconvenient Truth" and
internationally-known English environmental activist and author Larry
Lohmann's 10:45 talk on how to effectively fight global warming.
Lohmann will also be respondent to an impressive 12noon panel of
leading local environmental activists.
Michael Moore's enlightening exploration of the need for a national
healthcare program, "Sicko" screens at 2pm. Donna Smith who appears
in the film and has been on a national speaking tour organized by
Healthcare-NOW, California Nurses Association and Physicians for a
National Health Program will speak following the film at 4pm and a
panel of local healthcare reform activists will explain that
private-profit health insurance is the problem, not the solution.
This free conference is being organized by the Winter Conference
Organizing Committee created by the Wasatch Coalition for Peace and
Justice, Utah Jobs with Justice and We the People for Peace and
Justice. A major purpose of the conference is to encourage
participation in an open Saturday evening plenary session to
democratically discuss proposals for future political action -
including a spring mobilization.
More Utah progressive and activist organizations are continuing to get
involved with the conference, becoming sponsors and adding to the
interesting array of presentations scheduled in the Union Building
next door, see <
www.agenda08.org>. Everyone's participation is
welcome and needed at the weekly Tuesday evening organizing meetings,
starting at 6:30 in the 2nd floor conference room of the SLC downtown
library.
