Dear Friends:
Our Mesa Sprint Triathlon November meeting is next Tuesday at 7:00 at Kino Aquatic Center (on Horne, just south of Brown).
We’ve had some good dialogue about the various issues relating to location, safety, water temperature, etc. At our October meeting, it was decided that we would move forward to investigate whether the ASU Polytechnic location would be a feasible alternative to Kino. It appears that a consensus is forming in favor of that location to stage the event. At our meeting next week, we will be discussing and making a decision about possible changes in the date and time of the Race in order to overcome challenges posed by the ASU Polytechnic venue.
I hope to see you next week, especially those of you with experience participating in triathlons. Your insights and recommendations are invaluable.
Best regards,
BERT

Mesa Triathlon Committee members,
My wife and I participated in the Casa Grande, Desert Grande Triathlon last weekend and while there we took mini surveys with the athletes. We asked them what made them choose this event. Here is what the major responses were:
1) Price – event entry was a “good” value – Individual Tri entry fee was $45.00.
2) Word of Mouth- they had either done the event before or where there with someone who had done it before. This was their 19th annual event. First year they had about 30 participants. This year they had over 410 participants in the Tri.
3) Pool - the liked the swim distance of 400 meters and the pool temp – comments were, “I can’t swim in cold water”, “Cold swims make the rest of the race miserable.”, “if you can’t use a wetsuit then the pool needs to be heated”.
4) Bike course- all right hand turns, one loop, good road, minimal traffic
5) Location was not much of a factor. The participants were willing to travel.
They had plenty of parking and plenty of room for staging. The bike staging area was contained in the tennis courts. The bike course was a single loop all right hand turns with decent road conditions. The run was a trail run single loop.
Overall impression for our event was that the water temperature will be a significant factor in the number of participants.
Maybe we should revisit using Skyline Pool for our event?? If we can design a bike course in this area it has all the other qualities we need.

Given the concerns of “water temparture” , you should all understand that the POLY pool is over 60 years old with no access to temperature controls (gas or electric). There is a single outlet on deck. Any heating system will have to be on deck before the event and hope that the air/ground temp helps out.

Thank you Vance. Do you know of any heating systems that have been used successfully at the pool? Maybe for other events that have been hosted there?
We’ve looked into heating the pool. It’s a longshot. That’s why one of the ideas we’ll be discussing tomorrow night is the possibility of moving the event to the Fall, say October 22. On that date, we can get same ideal air temperatures as we would expect in April, but the water temperature down at ASU Polytechnich will be about 10 degrees warmer (right around 79-80).
As always, if the emails are getting to be too much for your inbox, simply reply directly to me and I’ll take care of it.
