Bert - James was able to get some answers for us on the construction at ASU Poly.  According to some of the folks at the campus, this has already been postponed a couple of times, so I would guess that  the bids require that the work be done before a specified date and so these dates are pretty accurate.

Anna and Mike:

A triathlon is schedule for the ASU east campus next spring.  The latest info I have for the ring road construction is from June to October of 2011.  Is this still correct?

Thanks!

James - Do you know how I can find out about when some scheduled road work is actually going to be started out at the Williams Gateway area - perhaps even on the ASU Poly campus?  It may affect the routing of either the bike course or run route.  I think it was scheduled initially in June, then delayed to October, and now I don't know when it will start.  It may even be helpful to us for traffic control.  I just don't know whom to contact.

Thanks,

Russ Gillard

The Tour de Mesa (Phoenix) is the 2nd of April and the City of Mesa bike month event “Bike4Life” is the 16th.  I think that you could move our event to the first weekend in May and we would be fine.

The US Masters National Championships is coming to Mesa at the Kino Aquatics Center the last weekend in April (4 day event).  Some of us will be participating, plus others may want to watch since several former Olympians (Rowdy Gaines) will be there.   This is a huge event that we will not want to conflict with in my opinion.

Sounds like we need to consider moving the event date or time back if we’re going to do the ASU Polytechnic location for the event. We may be able to find a way to heat up that pool a bit for the event, but I don’t think we can count on it at this point. Does anyone think that a 9:00 or 10:00 start time would deter participants from signing up? Is anyone aware of any direct conflicts with other events if we move our race to one of the other Saturdays in April (Say, the 30th)?

Please don’t hesitate to chime in, whether to me only, or the entire group. Your candid opinion is appreciated!

As I mentioned to Bert in an earlier email, 71 degrees is too cold for most people for a non wetsuit triathlon race.

I just competed in the Mesa Halloween Sprint Triathlon (or something like that) this morning at Freemon pool in East Mesa (Power and Brown).  It was actually a decent venue for a pool swim race - do you know if they heat this pool?  The pool in only 8 lanes of 25 yards but we did a 400yd swim - serpentine swim down the 8 lanes then you get out and go back to the start to do it again.  Yes, it got a little congested in some places but It was a nice swim nonetheless.  The bike course was 12 miles - three 4 mile loops.  I thought the bike course was safe as the city coned off an enire lane of traffic for us all the way around.  Finally, the run we did was only 2 miles but you could easily add an extra mile if you wanted.

Bert - The "some kind of all night walk-a-thon" sounds like it must be the annual Relay for Life event that is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, held at about 5,000 locations nationally.  If that's what it is, there will be teams camped in the field inside the track all night that will have to be packed up and cleared out when it's over.  I've done the one in East Mesa (which is one of the largest in the western region) for about the last 9 or 10 years, and it's usually around Noon or later by the time we have it all cleaned up.  The difference is that East Mesa has around 130 teams and ASU Poly usually has about 15-20 teams, so probably much simpler clean-up.  I think it would be risky to plan on using the track before 10AM that day.

Maybe we could consider starting the main event at 8:00 which would use the pool and bike route prior to needing access to the field and/or the track.  We could then do the splash and dash afterwards.  If we do that, I think we need to have plenty of options for the family members who are waiting for their participants to complete the triathlon.

I'd like to not change the date at this point, since we've got the timing contracted for the 9th, and also for personal reasons, I'm not available for the next two weekends after that.  Is there anything we can do for the week or so ahead of the 9th to help raise the water temperature a few degrees - solar covers, rented heating system, "jet-type" heaters along the ends of the pool ala NFL sidelines, outdoor propane radiant heaters, etc?

Thanks for doing all of this leg work.

ASU Polytechnic is looking very promising so far as an alternate staging area for our event. As I mentioned before, the bike and run course options in that area present much safer and less expensive alternatives to the possible courses around Kino.

It appears that we will be able to obtain approval from ASU to hold the event there at no cost. In fact, they seem very enthusiastic to host the event. However, we may need to revisit the date of the event for a few reasons:

First, the pool out there is not heated. It won’t be as bad as I thought. The water temperature records for the pool suggest that it will be about 71 degrees in early April and about 74 degrees later in April. I need your opinion about whether this justifies moving our date back two or three weeks.

The other potential issue with April 9th is an event going on the night before on the track just north of the pool. It is some kind of all night walk-a-thon that should be wrapped up by 6am on the 9th. I don’t think the two events are necessarily mutually exclusive. But it may present a challenge we don’t need to deal with. Your thoughts?

Another thing we may need to reconsider in connection with the ASU site is the start time for the event. We have previously decided to start the youth splash and dash at 7:00am and the main event at 8:00. If the pool is a bit chilly, we may want to move those times back a bit so that the air temperature is a bit warmer. Perhaps we could also do the youth event after the main event. What time is too late to get going that morning?

Thanks for your continued interest and involvement in this race for a great cause. As always, if you’re tired of getting these emails, just let me know and I can remove you from this list.

Regards,

BERT
