Dear Friends:
Many thanks to each of you who made it to our meeting this evening. Last week, we had our second meeting with City traffic officials to explore our course options. We concluded that there are some serious challenges to overcome in order to create a safe bike course from Kino Aquatic Center. The cost in terms of traffic control could rival our expected revenue for the event.
James Hash suggested that we consider staging the event from the ASU Polytech campus. There is an 8 lane pool there. It doesn’t present as many options as the Kino Pool, but with the recent completion of the Ray road extension between Ellsworth and Sossaman, we could do a nice big loop around the Williams Gateway Airport. This loop presents a much better bike course option. We think we could design a decent 5k run course around the ASU Polytech campus.
The consensus at this evening’s meeting was to hold off on generating any further promotional materials referencing Kino Pool and to aggressively explore the feasibility of using the ASU Polytech facilities instead. Stay tuned for more information as we look into that option this week. If you happen to have a connection with the ASU East Community or Williams Gateway Airport, please let me know.
We’re making steady progress in other aspects of planning the event. Our website is up (mesasprinttriathlon.com). We have created some additional promotional material. Ashlee’s Print Shop has graciously agreed to donate the printing we need. We’re registered on Active.com and several other online event calendars. Many thanks to each of you who has taken an assignment to help out in any way.
Please mark your calendar for our next Organizing Committee meeting on November 16th at 7:00 at Kino Aquatic Center.
All best,
BERT

Thank you Bert for all your continued efforts and leadership. The ASU Polytech campus looks like a much easier course layout logistically for the bike course and the run route. Just a reminder to everyone that we are still looking for sponsors for the event. We are going to be incorporating ASU resources with the new site. If any of you have any contact with ASU or possible sponsors connected with ASU please contact me.
I went over to the ASU Polytech campus this morning and drove the proposed bike loop circling the airport. About 10.9 miles. Very nice surface, long straitaways, nice views, and all right hand turns. There would be minimal traffic control issues for the small portion of the loop going out and getting back into the ASU/Williams Gateway area. It’s all commercial, so it should be pretty quiet on a Saturday morning.
Anyone have suggestions for a 5k run course beginning and ending near the pool? It looks like the track just north of the pool would be a good place to stage the finish of the run.
The pool out there is nothing fancy, but it should to the trick. I don’t believe it is heated. Anyone know of a way to get that water temperature up a bit for a chilly morning in April?
