Mike McCaffrey and I visited the ASU Polytechnic campus a few weekends ago. The main part of the bike course circling Gateway Airport is very bicycle friendly. Long straightaways, smooth road surface, no traffic turning onto the course – even the views of the surrounding mountains are nice. There is only a quarter mile or so at the beginning and end of the course that will present any logistical challenges. You’ll have to use your imagination a bit on this course link, because it doesn’t show the newly completed Ray Road extension that now connects Sossaman and Ellsworth (the actual loop will be about 11 miles). But take look at the beginning and end of this proposed course and let me know what you think.

As for the run, here is one way we could do it so that it doesn’t interfere with the bike course. It’s a nice little 5k tour of the ASU Polytechnic campus. I like Mike’s idea to end on the track where there is plenty of room to stage the finish of the race.

We can do a 400 yard swim in the pool out there by repeating a serpentine course up one lane and back the next through all 8 lanes.

Your thoughts?

The bike looks good, but on the run I would suggest we do not cross Williams Field road as this is the main entrance to campus and can be busy. An alternate route would be to continue north on Clearview instead of turning west on Ulysses (near mile one). We could stay to the right of the turn-about and head west on Tillman to connect with the original route. We can add a lap on the track at the end. That might be a nice touch.

I like Travis's suggestions, although I don't think the entrance will be busy on a Saturday morning.    Russ
