Dear Friend,

NBC’s “Nightly News” goes on the air at 6:30 p.m. ET, but they often report news they say occurred tonight. How could they ever handle such late-breaking stories and also write the scripts?

Dictionaries define night as the period of darkness between sunset and sunrise, so for much of the year, 6:30 p.m., technically speaking, is not even considered night.

“Nightly News” has even reported news they say occurred late tonight. Yet even the time of the last item on the newscast, which shows up on the screen around 6:56 p.m. ET, is definitely not late tonight.

Recently, “Nightly” broadcast two stories they tonighted that I wondered about. So I rooted around on the Internet to see whether my doubts were on the mark. I wrapped up my exploration by writing an article, “How NBC Newscasters Turn Day into Night.” You can read it at http://www.mervinblock.com/?q=node/125.
