Dear Friend,

         One of the most irritating words in newscasters’ lexicon is learned, as in XYZ News has learned. It’s usually used to introduce a story, and it

suggests that the XYZ network (or station) has dug up this story itself and has it alone.

         I ‘ve been hearing a rash of learneds on NBC, so I decided to look into them.
