Two of the best sources of news in this country--the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal--break many big stories exclusively But those papers don't describe their stories as exclusive. It's a boastful word, and often tacky, too. Even so, many newscasts use the word "exclusive," even for stories that are routine, even for stories whose exclusivity is questionable.
Just last week, I ran into a network story that was ballyhooed as "exclusive." I had doubts about it, so I looked into it, then wrote "When Hype is Tripe." You can read it at my website: http://www.mervinblock.com/?q=node/104 .
