London's pay gap 50 % wider than the national average

Thanks to funding from Trust for London, Fawcett ran a campaign ahead of the London Mayoral Elections to ask - ‘What About Women in London?’

Our research found that the gap between women and men is wider in London than the rest of the UK in a number of key areas – for example, for every £100 men take home, women in the capital take home an average £77.

We called on mayoral candidates to pledge to assess the impact of their policies - including London’s budget - on women and men, and also hosted a pre-election Mayoral debate. Watch it here.

What did the local elections mean for women?

Nearly a century on from women winning the vote, there are still too few women in politics.

In May, local elections were held across much of England. Women made up 35% of the Councillors elected - an increase of 4% on previous years. Women made up 40 % of councillors elected for Labour, 34% of Liberal Democrats and 27% of Conservatives.

If you, like us, believe that the rate of progress is simply not fast enough, you can make sure your voice is heard by joining our coalition campaign Counting Women In here.

Time for bolder, bigger action on women’s equality? We think so too.

Fawcett is looking for new Trustees, including a dedicated fundraising lead, to help us further grow our influence, profile and size. If you think you’ve got the skills, experience and ideas to ensure sound governance and oversee our ambitious plans for growth, why not apply?

Make sure the world knows you are a feminist!

Established in 1866, Fawcett is the UK‚s leading campaign for equality between women and men. Our vision is of a society in which women and men enjoy equality at work, at home and in public life. We campaign on women‚s representation in politics and public life; pay, pensions and poverty; valuing caring work; and the treatment of women in the justice system. We make real differences in women‚s lives by creating awareness, leading debate and driving change and we have real lobbying power. Our successes range from a change in the law to allow political parties to use all-women shortlists to increase the number of women MPs, to reform of the rape law, to a new duty on public bodies to promote equality between women and men.

As a campaigning charity, we need your voices behind us and we are always in need of financial support. Join us today!
