"Meet Marai Larasi, Chair of End Violence Against Women Coalition and
director of IMKAAN. Ranking number 80 in the 2013 World Pride Power List
of the most influential LGBT people of the year in the worlds of business,
politics, arts and entertainment, she’s not one to miss. Find out how she
has been helping to empower women throughout her career.
It’s no surprise that Marai has made our list as one of our Top Girls with
her impressive career and utter devotion toward eradicating violence
against women and girls. Marai is the Director of leading UK-based black
feminist organisation Imkaan which is dedicated to ending violence against
women and girls. She is also Co-Chair of the End Violence Against Women
Coalition, the UK’s largest coalition of organisations working to
eradicate violence against women and girls. Marai has worked on ending
violence against women and girls for over 16 years and has developed and
led remarkable programmes which address gender violence within
marginalised groups. Marai is co-author of a UN Expert Group on Preventing
Violence Against Women & Girls report which will be presented at the
annual Convention on the Status of Women UN meeting in New York in March
2013. Marai has been awarded an MBE for her work with Black and Minority
Ethnic women. Marai also took part in the 56th session of the U.N.
Comission on the Status of Women (CSW). Her work focuses on strategic
advocacy and policy development and her organisation also works on the
challenges associated with the prevention of violence against women and
girls. Marai has written articles and targeted issues in the past
including the effects of sexualised pop culture on girls and how much
these effects are actually based on how the girls feel themselves about
it. With a reputation for being a powerful speaker and as a highly
respected woman in her field, this is definitely an event to come along
to, especially if you are interested in women’s rights and would like to
get involved in empowering women like Marai"
