I would be happy to help.  I live in the Shawnee/Merriam area.  I'm not a grower, just a frequenter of the Merriam and Shawnee farmers' markets, and very interested in local organic food.  I work 8:30-5:00 M-F, so evenings and weekends are possible meeting times for me.

~ Please respond to this group eMail thread by REPLY or REPLY TO ALL ~

Since 2008, we've had steady input and growing interest expressed
regarding a rebirth of Merriam Organic Market.  Now is the time to
start getting organized for next year...

I cannot commit to full-time management or oversight of every aspect
of M.O.M., but I will be happy to provide as much time and energy as I
can.  Suggestions and plans for opening in 2011 must be backed by your
participation and commitment to this long-term, cooperative project.

We are seeking motivated individuals and groups, in or close to
Merriam (KS), to MEET MONTHLY (sometimes more often) over the next 6
to 10 months, in order to CREAT, EXPLORE, DEVELOP & SET INTO MOTION
plans for re-inventing the Merriam Organic Market (M.O.M.).

Please REPLY (without changing the SUBJECT line) with your ideas and
preferred meeting dates / times / locations.

Thanks for your interest!

M.O.M. PRE-PLANNING FOR 2012?

Please take the lead and encourage your local friends to get involved.  One of you true-blue LOCAL+ORGANIC aficionados will eventually step up to be the actual full-time organizer of this project.  As a newly-posted Senior Co-coordinator for the KC Food Circle, I am over-tasked as it is, so I intend to advise and assist M.O.M. from the sidelines as much as is humanly possible.  Let me know what works.  I'm available most nights 9 until 11pm at 913-620-8427 (AT&T Cell Phone - *NO* texting available).

I will re-work the M.O.M. web site with WordPress and turn over editing to you, set up meetings with sister orgs, whatever you need from me I will try to provide.

I live in Shawnee off 55th Street, a stones throw from Merriam.  I produce organic veggies & bake all organic, and one of my goals for the year is to up production enough to participate in farmer's markets.  Shawnee's is just down the street from me, but I would love to have a second venue.  Merriam's is expensive to participate in, you have to commit to the full year's payment up front, and is quickly filled with prior year vendors.  For all these reasons I would love to have a second, more convenient and more affordable venue in Merriam to sell through.

I would be happy to attend any meetings you organize, but am a single mom of a toddler and can't realisitically overcommit myself to being a "planner" at this point.  Still... I would like to be included so I can contribute ideas, energy, and a heavy dose of enthusiasm.

I happen to think Merriam (and Shawnee for that matter) is more progressive than the city recognizes.  And I'm not entirely sure why Brookside seems to be the "hub" for all things healthy, organic, and whole foods.  :)

Welcome new list members!

Yes, Ali...

This section of JoCo, KS wants something like this, and Merriam can provide.  The minimal stuff going on at 117th or at Mission Farms is ok, but Merriam (the confluence of I-35/I-635 & Shawnee Mission Parkway) has great potential for productive market hours and drive-by traffic, weekday afternoons.  There must be a property owner along Merriam Drive who will work with you to get this started.

Talk amongst yourselves, please... share phone numbers... schedule a meeting of 4 or 5 people at the Antioch Library some afternoon... drive along Merriam Drive and knock on doors to find properties that might fit, then report in email.  Anywhere along Merriam Drive will do.

It is crucial to understand that YOU have to provide critical mass on your own. I'll help lead the startup, but I cannot spearhead this thing alone again - the community must be behind it.  Let me know when to be where, what for, etc...

Once things get going, I'd be happy to advertise the market to my customers via email. My email updates are sent out about every 3-4 weeks, and go out to about 300 of my customers who are mostly local (I'd guess over 90% are in KC), natural-minded parents, doulas, midwives, etc. I wish I had a storefront that could serve a purpose for you!

Here's a little bit of what I've learned, having started up a successful business (targeting young, natural-minded families), and spent zero on marketing...

- get a great website setup! I use GoDaddy's Website Tonight - It's $5 a month for 5 pages, and really easy to use, even if you've never done website stuff before. You HAVE to have a website for people to find you these days, and you have to keep it up to date.
- get listed on Google Maps with your website (free)
- start gathering emails of interested people and send out updates and requests of things you need (just like Dave is doing!). but as you have customers, get their contact info and send them fun info - recipes, market updates, specials, featured growers, etc. (Brooke at BADSEED does a GREAT job of this and I think her marketing skills is part of why she's doing so great). Or give them something at the market to get them to sign up - an organic piece of fruit or veggie... I use MadMimi for my email service - again it's really cheap and they come out looking great with pics and a consistent look, without much effort.
- get a facebook page and keep it current. network with the other organic markets and growers both on facebook and your website.

Dave is good at all of the above, but like he said, I'm sure he's really busy and it would be best if someone would take it on who is involved with the market. He helped me get started with just a few ideas!

Best of luck with planning!

What about finding a space similar to Badseed? There are many
industrial type business along Merriam drive maybe one of them has a
space that could be rented? Seems like there is an empty store front
on the east side of Merriam Drive north of the Community Center? I'm
a consumer, not a producer but I'd love to see something in Merriam.

Well... In response to Dave's comment about needing a Merriam Drive property... my brother owns Heritage Tow, located @ 3500 Merriam Dr.  His property is all wrong with no place for people to park and sell.  But I am very familiar with who owns what in that area.  Seems to me the BIG parking lot outside of the Eagle's club, just to the East of their main building... seems that would be an ideal location to utilize.  I imagine they might want a donation to their club or something.  And, unfortunately I don't know anyone who is a member of that club... does anyone on this email list know anyone with them?

The nice part about that location is (1) most weekdays and weekend mornings there is no one parked there and no activities taking place for their club, (2) it's located exactly one block to the East of Antioch, smack dab between 635 and I-35's highway entry/exit.  It's also already paved and would be easy enough for vendors to set up tables and easy-up type tent structures.

PRECISELY - we are looking for a permanent space to be run 5-6 days a
week... not an outdoor market. BADSEED is the model, but we could use
more space, try double.

There is a group called the Downtown Merriam Partnership. They are a group of business owners and residents interested in seeing Merriam thrive. I have never been to a meeting but they might be a good place to start searching. The presidents name is Rick Williams and his number is 913-677-0919. I wish I could spearhead this effort but I travel for a living and my schedule is terribly unpredictable. I wish you the best in this search and would certainly shop at and promote this store. Merriam needs this!

I'm still interested in helping to organize.  I could make phone calls or other contacts, but I need to know what I'm talking about.  Is anyone interested in meeting for a half hour or so either at the library or a Merriam/Shawnee restaurant?

I have not yet responded to any of the emails, but I am also interested in doing what I can to help get this going.  I'm also not a grower, but I am passionate about local organic food.  Anne, what days/times are you available to meet?  I'm fairly flexible... day time hours work best, but I could do evenings if that works better for you.

My apologies to all for not moderating this list more diligently.

I will schedule a time at the Antioch Library branch and post the details here. 5 or 6 of us could work for an hour or two in one of their small meeting rooms.

Anyone have a better place in mind?  The main library branch at 87th and Foster?

I have a friend who owns a cupcake business. She has a vegan cupcake she would probably be more than happy to sell.

Also, I can help with any social media marketing and website development. I co-own a business, reidigitalmedia.com. I would be willing to build a website at cost, and volunteer my time.

Dave,

My apologies for not being able to help right know.  I am scheduled for surgery on Right knee on the 22nd.

I am still interested in providing meat to MOM’s.

Dave, I would like to have a booth for my pottery and possibly herbal remedies / vitamins from my online store, is that possible?
And are we considering any days during the week?

Thank you,

I have not been able to clear my schedule yet... but a meeting to discuss options and plans for an indoor, 5 or 6-day market will be held soon.

The outdoor marketplace, run by City of Merriam, goes on as it has done for years now.  Saturdays only, outdoors - that isn't us.

We'll be in touch, Marcella.  Thanks!

Just a consumer, but I could meet, give input and try to help get it
started. Antioch branch is perfect for me. Afternoons other than
Monday or Wed are best.

Although I work during the day, I can take off either a morning or afternoon with a few days notice.

Antioch Library or Central Resource on 87th is fine with me.  I have most Friday afternoons free, but will have to request time off for other weekdays.  I would like to meet and hear everyone's ideas.
