Note to all voters to close: This is not a LEGAL advice - the poster asks about a technical implementation issue which is ok according to the board. Technically he does not ask about LICENSING (terms etc. - legal issue and VERY complicated) but how to activate his key (technical issue), and we do handle those here. Heck, for some parts of windows there are hugh guidelines for the technical side...

Do you have a KMS server that is used to activate against and it is set up to activate Server 2019 servers? The last portion of the key in the screen shot indicates you are using a key designed to activate against a KMS server. If not, then you could try:

"Do you have a KMS server that is used to activate against and it is set up to activate Server 2019 servers '--> No, I don't know what KMS server means. I have a couple of Windows 2019 servers on the network.

I used the same ISO (downloaded from MS Volume Licensing site) for all Windows 2019 installations. No problem. I will forget about this server and set up a new server from the same ISO file and then try to activate that new server.

The other possibility is that you are out of activations for that key? How many license do you own for that key? It if is a MAK key, then there is a limit on the number of times it can be activated. I am not sure of the exact error when that happens as I work in an enterprise and we use KMS server to activate our systems.

According to the last characters in your screen shot, you seem to be using key "N69G4-B89J2-4G8F4-WWYCC-J464C". If that is the case, this is a key for using a KMS server. You may have some systems that activated, but that would be limited. As I mentioned above, if you do not know what a KMS server is, then you do not have one installed in your environment, you need to use a MAK key an that will have a limited number of activations depending on your EA.

Log on to the server using the local or domain Administrator account, open an elevated command prompt and perform the following steps to clear the product key, remove the product key, install the correct 5x5 product key and activate Windows.

1. Press the Windows Logo+R, type runas /user:admini...@domain.local cmd where domain.local is replaced by the name of the Active Directory domain or local server name and press Enter. The same task can be accomplished using the Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.

2. Type the Administrator account password when prompted and press Enter.

3. Type slmgr.vbs /ckms and press Enter to clear the product key. A Windows Script Host dialogue box should appear "Key Management Service machine cleared successfully." Click OK to dismiss the dialogue box.

4. Type slmgr.vbs /upk and press Enter remove the product key. A Windows Script Host dialogue box should appear "Uninstalled product key successfully." Click OK to dismiss the dialogue box.

5. Type slmgr.vbs /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX and press Enter to install the correct 5x5 product key. The 5x5 product key can be found on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for the server. A Windows Script Host dialogue box should appear "Installed product key XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX successfully." Click OK to dismiss the dialogue box.

6. Type slmgr.vbs /ato and press Enter activate Windows. A Windows Script Host should appear "Product activated successfully." Click OK to dismiss the dialogue box.

Product activation status in Windows Server can be determined using the following method.

Log on to the server using the local or domain Administrator account, open an elevated command prompt and perform the following steps to check product activation status. The License Status: Licensed indicates the correct product key has been entered and the product has been activated successfully.

3. Type slmgr.vbs /dli and press Enter.

I have the Universal License for Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher (all v2.0.4) and I'm NOT able to activate the license on my new Windows 11 laptop. I am getting the "cannot connect to server" error for all three products.

And that happened to me with the CS series some years ago. Adobe turned off those old servers and pushed everybody into subscriptions. What was supposed to be a permanent license just became an extended loaner. Not what I paid for.

One last real world point. Take a look at 3DCoat. More specifically, take a look at Pilgway, 3DCoat's developers. They're Ukraine based and developing smack dab in the middle of a war. If they didn't offer that offline licensing file alternative and their online licensing servers suddenly got destroyed, a LOT of pros and hobbyists relying on that software would be left hanging.

Windows instances use Microsoft Key Management Service (Microsoft KMS) on AWS for activation. If your instance can't reach the Microsoft KMS server, then you might receive a Windows activation error message. To resolve this error message, use one of these methods:

6. If the previous step fails activation, then check the network communication from the instance to the Microsoft KMS server. Perform telnet to the Microsoft KMS servers from the instance, and then open PowerShell and enter the following commands:

If yes, then I highly recommend that you should purchase a Volume License and build a KMS Server. That way, you don't even have to worry about customising the PID key and the KMS server will automatically activate your Windows clients after they get domain joined. That is actually the whole point of what somebody referred to as the "generic" PID key which is actually KMS Client PID key. Your KMS server which has the KMS Server PID key will automatically search for clients on your domain and keep them activated on a recurring schedule.

Now that you have bought yourself some time. You will need to convert the evaluation edition of Windows to a production version using a General Volume License Key (GVLK), which are used when setting up KMS clients. Microsoft publishes a list of those keys here. I suggest that you make a backup or snapshot of the server before attempting a conversion.

I do have server 2016 datacentre Hyper-V and my Gest VMs are server 2012 R2. My Windows 2016 hyper-v is activated with MAC key. buy when i run slmgr /ipk DBGBW-NPF86-BJVTX-K3WKJ-MTB6V on the Guest OS, i get below error: 0xc004e016 On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition.

Has anybody else had this, am pretty new to this VMWare stuff, the physical server had 2 cpu, 2048 mem and C: E: drive. I changed this to 1 cpu, 1048 mem and C: D:, brought the VM up for the first time, Windows asking for activation now. Is this only changed since R2 onwards?

Thanks for the response, I think this is the problem. The physical server has been built with a non volume license key, and .iso. I spoke to Microsoft this morning, the iso's match the volume license keys, otherwise neither work with, eg msdn downloaded. Tried entering our volume license key and still doesn't work, looks like I will have to build this server again as a vm from scratch.

Upon further research, it appears there is a bug in the KMS activation process for Windows Servers 2012 R2 versions. If a third-party application has been installed on the server it might mess DCOM permissions on the server that can result in the server being unable to activate. Have in mind that this problem only appears in KMS activation environments.

We recommend using the Server authorization-to-run (ATR) service to simplify server licensing. If you chose not to use Server ATR, you will use the legacy licensing technology which does not provide the dynamic management capabilities of Server ATR.

When using Server authorization-to-run (ATR) to activate Tableau Server, you can change the ATR duration and use a setting different than the default of 432000 seconds (5 days). If you're creating a test server or virtual machine (VM) that will have a short lifespan, you might want to shorten the ATR duration. Similarly, if you have a server that you plan to keep for a long time, you might want to lengthen the ATR duration.

A license server stores all client licenses installed on a Terminal Server and provides a secure way of tracking the licenses that have been issued to Remote Desktop clients. You need to install the license server, activate it through the Microsoft Clearinghouse, and install license key packs onto the license server before issuing Remote Desktop (Terminal Server) client licenses. For more information on the license server, refer to the Client Services section of the Windows Server Help.

The following instructions allow you to activate the license server through the Internet. If you want to activate your server through telephone, fax, or World Wide Web, refer to the Windows Server Help.

Before you start memoQ server for the first time, you need to activate it. Activation means proving that you have a valid license to use memoQ server. To do that, use the memoQ server activation program. You can also use memoQ server activation to check your licenses, or to activate licenses you rent for a period of time.
