I just posted yesterday about our experience last week on Orient Beach on the French side of St. Maarten. We saw a lot of nudity, both topless and full, and found it very difficult to avoid. However, others have had different experiences there on other days. I was told afterward that there is much less nudity on the Dutch side of St. Maarten, although I don't have any personal experience with that.

Orient Beach (check google) should demonstrate what is considered "acceptable" on the French side (short version -- complete nudity, men and women). The Dutch side, as with many locales in Europe, also considers topless for women to be no more "inappropriate," or a cause for gawking, than topless for men. Many cultures in the world consider female breasts no different than male chests.

If your personal view of the human body deems views of the top half of a female, or the bottom half of a male or female, something shameful or taboo, then some research into cultural norms in the Caribbean (and the rest of the world) would be indicated. American cultural norms are by no means a worldwide standard in this regard.

To the OP, why does it matter "how prevalent" this is? If you encounter it even once (it seems clear from your original post) you will be disturbed. That means that any place where you might encounter this is not a good vacation place for you, so I'd urge you to choose a vacation where this isn't going to happen. Walt Disney World (one of my favorite places!) comes to mind -- along with tons of mainstream Florida beaches. Hope you have a great vacation!

Like I just posted on another thread - we were in St. Martin for three weeks this Jan/Feb and every beach we visited had at least one topless lady enjoying the sun. We didn't visit that many - only hit about ten beaches this year.

Yeah darn it, those bare boobies just scare the stuffins out of me!! So I make sure to keep a sharp eye on them so they don't make any aggressive moves towards me!:p I'd sure hate to caught off guard ya know!:D

I'm not so sure about the "British" part though. I've heard that there are several topless (perhaps even CO?) places in England. I know from personal experience that there are some in BC (granted, that's Canada, but still part of the Commonwealth).

Beside a sign in the US Virgin Islands that "strictly" prohibits any form of nudity a young couple lay out on the sand in what I would consider a state of nudity, but they each had a bracelet on so perhaps I am wrong in my assessment of nudity.

No, I'm not worried about them. It's those people who, at the sight of a naked body, know that their life is ruined and just want to riot, cause mayhem and murder...and perhaps steal a beach chair. :D

On the second, we went to Orient on the French Side. I noticed a couple topless women, but not what I'd call a lot. I'd say I noticed more of it on both Aruba and Curacao. If you walk down to the Club Orient end, you'll see more full nude people, but almost all of them will be men. It's not clear from your post whether this would bother you more or less. :)

Granted, that's just two beaches on two random days and not especially scientific. Dutch-culturally-influenced islands in general don't seem to have any problem with topless women (see: Aruba and Curacao) but I think on St. Martin most of that happens on the French side because it, and especially Orient Beach, are infamous for that. I would think if you stuck to the Dutch beaches you wouldn't see a lot of it if you didn't want to.

On our last couple of visits, there was some partial and a couple of total nude sunbathers even in the 'regular' part of Orient - to be honest, it didn't even register as the place is so easygoing and laid back. Don't look to hard and you won't even see it!!

By this do you mean topless women? I just want to make sure that it's clear to everyone that the "regular" part of Orient includes the French custom of optional topless sunbathing for women, so seeing this would not be the least bit unusual. We completely agree with you about how easygoing and relaxed it is there.

But since pequalsmd2011 is concerned with toplessness (rather than just full nudity) and would prefer to see none, then MichelleP's response is worth reading as she is straight-forward about it without insulting pequalsmd2011's opinions or preferences, which are a personal decision and are perfectly valid.

As an FYI, I don't know what the "usual" mix is, but our experience was not like DireMongoose's because "almost all" of the fully nude people were not men. We saw an pretty even mix of nude men and women at Club Orient. Of course, it's also probably more surprising to many Americans to see fully nude men, so it may be more, um...obvious at a glance?

And for those who've been there, I wouldn't exactly compare it to say...I dunno the grotto at the Playboy mansion pool! I mean most of the nude people we saw were not exactly what some think of, say like "girls gone wild" types. Maybe those types are there at other times of the year and if so can you let me know so I plan my next visit accordingly!:D

You probably didn't think you'd be going Topless everywhere, and yet, here we are. It's wild what readers will do for you. Wear these low on your nose and enjoy a better reading experience (thanks to the topless rims on the front of the specs).

Like most brands of glasses, the measurements of eyebobs glasses can be found on the inside of the temple arm. The first number indicates the lens width (46mm) and the second number is the bridge (23mm). If you already have a pair of glasses you like, you can use those measurements as a reference.

We live in one half of a cottage and rent the other half. Last night, we had three girls in their early 30's (our age as well) stay with us. We were out to Thanksgiving dinner when they arrived, but I had snacks out for them and left the lights on. These were the first guests I haven't met on arrival. When we got home, I knocked on the adjoining door to introduce myself and see that they were comfortable. The girls were very friendly and two of them chatted with me about their day. I took their breakfast requests and gave them some suggestions for other places to visit. I caught a glimpse of the third girl and she was definitely wearing a shirt.

A few moments later, she strolled out of the bedroom topless. I immediately shut the door behind me and told them that my husband was also home. The other girls didn't seem bothered. The third girl walked right up to me and started asking questions about some of my paintings. I was shocked but stayed professional. I looked her in the eyes, answered her questions, and left asap. I know I should have said something but I was too flabbergasted. I've seen my friends' breasts at the beach and while breastfeeding and I'm certainly not a prude but this was a complete stranger renting a room in my home. I'm glad that she felt comfortable here and confident in her body but I think it was a bit much to do what she did.

In our house rules, it states that we do not allow sunbathing in underwear or in the nude because we had an incident earlier in the summer. Granted, this girl wasn't sunbathing but I thought our views on strangers' nudity were pretty clear. Apparently not. It made it impossible for my husband to help host them in case she exposed herself to him as well. He left extra early for work this morning because he was afraid of being accused of voyerism or sexual interference if she did the same thing to him.

Pros: Cirque du Soleil poured $50 million into its 2003 entry into the Vegas adult entertainment show business, and every dollar of it seems to have been spent to create a unique and credible sequence of scenes exhibiting both impressive sex appeal as well as the sort of eye-popping athleticism that the Montreal circus troupe is known for. The intimacy of the theater and the live music provided cues that this would be a high-quality endeavor, and even the scene that could have been crass and exploitative -- two topless women frolicking together in a gigantic fishbowl -- was executed with sensuous grace thanks to beautiful synchonized-swimming choreography.
