Repository is a resource, you want the resource to be available to your Actions in QTP. Then you use Associate Repository to your Actions.
Merging takes place between 2 repositories and finally you can Associate the Merged Repository.

associating repository means attaching repository to the current test.

Merge Repository means combining two repositories.
