Hi everyone,

This is my first post here. I live in San Francisco but am coming to Merced next week to do a ride into the foothills with a friend. We're especially interested in tying out the tiny, partially paved or unpaved back roads, like White Rock and Indian Gulch.

On that note, does anyone know if it's possible to ride La Paloma Road from Hornitos to Snelling Rd? Google streetview made it a short ways into either end, and I can see what look to be signs closing the road to cars, but since there are no "Private Property" signs visible, perhaps it's still a legal right-of-way for bikes?

Thanks for any info!
Brian

Yes, you can ride LaPalma Road from Merced (Snelling Rd) to Hornitos Rd.   You will however be prepared to jump a few fences on La Paloma.  It is a county/public road – but that doesn’t mean that the occasional farmer may want to insinuate it is their land.  They are generally pretty cool about it though.   There are some great dirt/gravel/sort of paved roads up that way.

Hi Brian; nice to meet you.

I've ridden from Merced to Hornitos on La Paloma Rd. and back from Hornitos to Merced.  I've done a loop from Merced to Hornitos on La Paloma to Indian Gulch Rd to South Bear Creek and back to Merced.  It's about a 50 mile loop.  All of the roads are public, but there are gates.  The gates on La Paloma are locked, but the gates on Indian Gulch are latched; just make sure you close them after going through.  Another cool ride is starting in Merced to La Grand & from Le Grand to White Rock Rd.  From White Rock you can go to Old Highway to Cathey's Valley.  From Cathey's Valley you can ride to Hornitos and from Hornitos back to Merced on La Paloma.  This is about a 90 mile ride.

Have fun,

Ben

Thanks for the info, Ben!

That second route you described is about what we're planning. We'll start in Merced, then White Rock Rd, Old Hwy and Indian Gulch to Hornitos, then La Paloma Road back to town. Possibly a detour into Catheys Valley for supplies if necessary.

Thanks to everyone for the advice! We had a fantastic ride, completing the route described in the last message just after dark. La Paloma involved navigating a lot of mini mud ponds, but this just added to the fun.

One question. I was planning to scout out, for future rides, the entrance to Beach Road, which according to Google Maps connects White Rock Road to Ben Hur Road. There didn't seem to be any sign for this road on White Rock ... does it really exist? If so, does anyone have any landmarks for figuring out which of the gated dirt tracks leading off of White Rock is it?

I am not familiar with Beach Road off of White Rock. I know most of the roads that way so it probably doesn't exist.  Or is private.  DF

Beach road is on white rock , it has a gate to go threw to get on it. Coming down white rock from old hwy , it's where the road starts to flatten out , on the right .
