I also have 3 files that have been on the SD card (actually, on a previous card, and they've been migrated from card to card for the past 8 years or so) which I actually wish to use as ringtones. They're in MP3 format (in contrast to my music which is in Ogg/Vorbis format).
Kindly read the question again. That excludes the files from everything, media players included. I only want to exclude these files from notifications/ringtones. I have a media program that excludes the ring-tones from the playlist, that's a solved problem, and NOT what I asked about.
For some strange reason, when the Nexus 5 got its Lollipop update, the new stock system sounds were left out. These include updated versions of all of the ringtones and notifications, which Google revamped with a more mature sound that matches Android 5.0's elegant Material Design.
When you get back up, all of your ringtones and notification sounds will be updated to the new Lollipop style. These sound files have the same names and overall feel of the older sounds, they've just been retouched a bit with a more refined flair.
