Sometime after the coronation, Rome is attacked by the Goths. Most soldiers of the Nova Invicta legion are killed while Aurelius is stunned and left for dead. Orestes and his wife are killed by Odoacer's lieutenant, Wulfila, who captures Romulus. The next day, Odoacer, now the ruler of the Western Empire, plans to have Romulus killed. At Ambrosinus' urging, Odoacer spares and exiles Romulus to Capri instead, along with Ambrosinus himself while Wulfila and his men are sent to guard them. With Ambrosinus' help, Romulus enters a villa built during the reign of Emperor Tiberius and he discovers a hidden chamber there. Inside, Romulus finds a statue of Julius Caesar holding his sword, forged by a Chalybian smith during his invasion of Britain. Below the statue, Romulus reads a dais which states that the sword is made for "he who is destined to rule". This is interpreted as a prophecy and Romulus keeps the weapon.
Ambrosinus and Romulus are soon rescued by Aurelius and his surviving soldiers Vatrenus, Batiatus and Demetrius, accompanied by Mira, an Indian agent of the Eastern Empire. They take Romulus to a seaport where the Eastern Emperor has promised Romulus safe passage to Constantinople. They barely escape after they learn that the Eastern Empire has actually betrayed them and sided with Odoacer. Ambrosinus persuades Romulus to seek refuge in Britain, where the lost Roman legion may remain loyal. They are eventually followed by Goths under Wulfila, who covets Caesar's sword after learning of the prophecy. After crossing the Alps and the English Channel, the party reaches Britain and they travel to Hadrian's Wall. In there, they meet a man, revealed to be the legion's former commanding general, who tells the group that the legion had decided to disband and settle as farmers following the Empire's withdrawal. However, they all live in fear of a tyrannical warlord named Vortgyn, who is actually an old enemy of Ambrosinus. The group takes shelter in a small village where Romulus befriends a young girl named Igraine.
Thomas Sangster (Romulus) was one of the last to be cast. He had previously worked with Firth in Love Actually (2003) and Nanny McPhee (2006), and their familiarity with each other benefited both.[4]
My first Spartan Phoenix Video Pick is The Last Legion (2007) starring Colin Firth, Ben Kingsley, Aishwarya Rai and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. As the Roman Empire crumbles, young Romulus Augustus flees the city and embarks on a perilous voyage to Britain to track down a legion of supporters. I picked this movie cause it stars Colin Firth in another role that he commands in this sword and some sorcery film about the beginning of the Excalibur sword legend. The film has a great ensemble cast of cool warriors and great bad guys. Colin Firth plays the lead good guy as he leads a small band of warriors that play bodyguard to a young Romulas played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster who can also bee seen as the love sick boy in the romantic Christmas comedy Love Actually (2003) which also co-stars Colin Firth. The coolest character in The Last Legion is the mysterious ass kicking warrior woman played by Indian beauty Aishwarya Rai.
So The Last Legion is my first Spartan Phoenix Video Pick. This is the last Spartan Phoenix Movie Marathon Man Blog for the 2010 year, which has tuned out to be an interesting one. I have one more month in my yearlong experiment. Stay tuned for more!

So, this is a movie about honor, loyalty, love and friendship. It may not be one of the best but it does show a good time. Of course there are many who disagree as the movie was rated a 5.4 on IMDB. Watch and see for yourselves. I think it is a 7.

Valerio Massimo Manfredi's The Last Legion opens on the day that the Western Roman Empire collapses finally in 470AD, as the Last Emperor of Rome is encamped and protected by the Nova Invicta Legion. What comes to mind when you think of the French Foreign Legion? Most likely men struggling through the desert in heavy blue coats and white peaked caps. It was here that the routine use of daily 40km marches made the Legion the fastest-moving infantry strike force then in existence. The Legion were military innovators and had the quickest system of infantry movement prior to motorised transport. Two men would share a mule that carried their kit. One would walk fast at its side while the other rode. After a few kilometres, they would change places. With this system, the legionnaires could travel 70 or 80 km a day with full kit, just as fast as Bedouin raiders with their camels.
Well hello there. Welcome back to Hammer the Backlog, the weekly Warhammer mini painting, productivity and accountability blog. This week I fully recovered from my gastrointestinal distress of last week, and there was a bank holiday, so I got a lot done, and in good time too. Perhaps the biggest thing was that I played my first ever full game of Warhammer Fantasy, despite having owned the box since 1998!
On the other hand, the actual painting rock is coming along nicely. The five models painted this week brought the lost legion over into fully complete and got 3/12 of the Leopard Company painted, a solid 25%. I have no doubts that the painting rock for this quarter will be achieved.

Hacking their way through the main body of frenzied attackers, the front line of the Roman Ninth Legion realised, only too late, that they were completely surrounded. From all sides swarmed the barbarian host: a seething mass of unending savagery. Seeing the danger, the officers attempted to hold the line, so that the bulk of the troops could fall back in some degree of order, but it was already too late. With all hope of escape denied to them, the last survivors were butchered where they stood and their eagle standard taken.
The Ninth was an elite military unit that had been operating in Britain following the Roman invasion of AD 43. The legion was instrumental in combating native resistance in northern England and had been in the front line during the revolt of Queen Boudica in AD 60, in which it had suffered heavy losses. In the early AD 70s, the legion pushed forward to a new base at York and, ten years later, was actively campaigning across the Highlands of Scotland. By AD 100 it was back in northern England, but by the early 120s it had vanished, its place at York being taken by another legion, the Sixth.
Up until the 1950s, the 'mysterious disappearance of the Ninth Legion' was not a mystery at all. Winston Churchill, in his History of the English-Speaking Peoples (1956), observed that the unit had certainly disappeared "in combating an obscure rising of the tribes in northern Britain". Even if some academics disagreed, most conceded that the last confirmed sighting of the legion had been in northern Britain during the early years of the second century. By the AD 160s, when a list of all serving regiments was compiled, the Ninth had ceased to exist. Their ultimate fate, however, was not recorded.
What gave the 'lost in Britain' myth a huge boost was the novel The Eagle of the Ninth (1954) by Rosemary Sutcliff, a hauntingly evocative account of life and loss in Britannia. The hero of this tale is Marcus Flavius Aquila, a young man trying to discover what happened to his father, chief centurion in the Ninth, who went missing when Marcus was only a child. Journeying beyond Hadrian's Wall, Marcus learns the truth about how the Ninth was destroyed, and in doing so stumbles upon the legion's emblematic bronze eagle, now in enemy hands. His personal odyssey can end only with the rescue of the eagle and its safe return to Roman-held territory.
