Dear Bill,
Yes. These children who are "good at math" are actually good at mindless
memorization and drill.
We barely teach math anymore below the university level.
As you, of course, know.

Dear Bill,
It boggles my mind. To get a phd in math I had to solve a research problem that
the best minds in math ( including Nash) had failed on for decades.
But to get a phd in psych., these guys are studying when children read +
instead of =.
Makes me reel.

Dear jerry,
Because they cheapen the term Phd.

Because they act--on university committees-- as if they should be taken as our
intellectual equals. I am sick of having to pretend that they are. I am tired
of the smart being bossed around by the dumb.

Dear jerry,
There are certainly bright even brilliant p-shrinks ( I see one.). But, these
were not p-shrinks but ed psych people doing drivel.
I have no question that You are smart. I take that as an axiom, based on
our years of interaction.
Professors of psychology at universities are generally not up to the
intellectual level of professors of math, physics, etc.

At the Jung Institute in Zurich, there were some really smart pshrinks. They
were not awarding PHD degrees for counting the number of times children read =
as +.

I would hope that social intelligence and an understanding of human motivations
and learning skills etc., would be of value in academic committee politics.
Hey, as specialists in all that, you might imagine that they would be running
things by now.
But, actually they are dumb as clams, and are an annoyance not an asset.

I agree.

My explanation for this is that it is possible to get away with BS in
social sciences,hence bad research proliferates.
