How can you tell?

How can you tell if you have a gifted child? My granddaughter is nearly 2
years old and there are some things that she does that make me wonder. I
don't really know whether she could be considered gifted or just very smart
in some areas. Please give me an idea of what to look for.

Hard to tell at that age but in my case I started reading at about 2 1/2 and
by the age of 4 was beating the old men in the park at chess and Pinocle. In
short, look for attributes that are advanced for her age. Things like an
early sense of humor, speaking in more complex sentances, etc are good
indicators. It may be a little early to make an determination but then again
I am no child expert. I also note that most parents I speak to think that
their kids are gifted. In fact, I have never run into a parent who plain out
said that their children were average or worse.
