I have been teaching my son #'s and how to read for the past nine months. My
son is almost 3 1/2 yrs old now and he reads books at the grade 2 level, can
count to 100 and recognizes #'s up 999.

He was doing 100 piece puzzles at 21/2 yrs.

Does this mean my son is gifted?

I don't have any other kids to measure him against except his older brother
who is now 6.

If he is gifted, what do I do?

He will be starting preschool this fall and I am worried that he will be
bored.

Sincerely,

Luc

Ways to keep gifted/any child from being bored:
1. make a habit of curiosity
2. Private school
3. MUSIC
4. SPORTS
5. compose stories in his head

hE wILL be bored - teach him to cope. Lots of things
in life are boring - learn to observe everything that
is happening.

Three and a half is a good age to start learning patience....while he is
bored, someone else will be struggling to learn.
Just so long as he doesn't get shortchanged, he will learn.

Dear Luc,

I can only imagine the fear of sending another child off to school, no
matter what grade leval. Every year there are new chalenges, for the child
and you. I do not think your child will have any problems, even though he is
able to read well and count and has good recognition skills. He will be with
other children doing all sorts of activites. He will continue to learn, and
will therefore not have any trouble. The most challenging task is
interpersonal communication, and that has us busy for our intire life. As
active and shocking your child is, this will not present a problem for a few
years, and the schools have programs for children who's knowledge and
learning skills are far above the average children at his age. I think your
son will be a great blessing, of which you never could imagine, even now.
Just enjoy the ride, and you will learn as much as he does. There will not
be any big problems, they will be easy to solve. Just help him to be humble
in a few years, his ego might get a little large! :) Mine would to.
Actually, mine had, I have talents, that as a teen ager, were far above teen
age leval. I am blessed with those, but I took the complements and fed them
to my ego. That could be the biggest problem in 4 or so years. Just love
him.

You might consider home schooling if your school district has problems
with above average learners, or if you cannot afford a decent private
school in your area.
