Sportsmen's Devotional

A Daily Study of God's Word for Christian Sportsmen August 7, 2011

Today's Photograph . . . . More Devoted To The Outdoors Than To Our Walk With The Lord (MQ)

Bible Study Verse
Acts 2:42, 46-47
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. (NIV)

Thoughts
On a warm August evening, a friend and I traveled up to a mountain lake at 9200 feet elevation. The coolness of the higher elevation was a welcome relief to the warm valley of the Wind River. The trout were very active, but were very selective that evening. We caught a lot of rainbows on Callibaetis emergers.

That evening we had the awesome privilege of seeing a herd of elk in meadow next to the lake. After 30 minutes or so, the elk left the meadow and were walking in the lake. I think the elk were avoiding the heavy concentration of mosquitoes in the meadow.

Our evening of fishing provided a good opportunity to witness to my friend. His wife is a Christian and very active in our church. Unfortunately, my friend attends church very seldom. I asked him what his feelings were about church. He said that he prefers going to the mountains rather than attending church.

I told him that earlier in my life I felt the same way, but realized later in my life that hearing the word and fellowshipping with other believers was critical to my spiritual growth. The Holy Spirit led me up to that point. I pray that the Holy Spirit leads me to other opportunities to witness to my friend.

Action Point

How many of us are more devoted to the outdoors than to our walk with the Lord?

We need every opportunity possible to hear the Word of God and fellowship with believers. In order to develop a deeper relationship with God and our brothers and sisters we should try to attend a small group/Bible study, Sunday school, a prayer group, and church services. "And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved,"(Acts 2:47b, NIV)

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day

Try buying or tying a gold-beaded woolly bugger with a red hook, black and red chenille, red flashabou, and black hackle. We've had unbelievable success, in any water, with this combination.

Today's Photograph . . . .  Jesus Was A Catch and Release Angler (Tom B)
Bible Study Verses

Mark 1:16-17

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow Me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." (NIV 1984)

Thoughts

One of the things I do is gathering weekly fishing reports by phone for a website that I work for. The reports I publish are more than just whether the fishing was good or bad. I try to attain as many details that I can get about where the fish were caught, size of the fish, what bait or lure used, what time of the day the fish were caught, and any special fishing technique utilized.

For a another publication, I gather fishing forecasts naming places to try for the coming month. . . kind of like predicting high and low tides for the upcoming month, except with a lot more information.

I enjoy gathering the information as I get the chance to talk with fishing guides, anglers, and other sources, many of whom I have established good friendships with over the years. Occasionally, I get the chance to go fishing with them.

I have to confess that after spending a day visiting with my sources by phone, I end up with a case of "fishing fever."

(Tom B)

Action Point

Do you think Jesus liked to fish? I think He did. Scripture tells us that He spent time hanging out along the seafront and lakeside. He liked visiting with fishermen. In matter of fact, He even asked some to come along and go fishing with Him.

Do you think as He walked along the shoreline He was asking how many fish the anglers caught, what kind of fish they caught, what bait they were using and where they were fishing?

His ultimate fish were the souls of men. He was a catch and release angler. The people He caught, He threw back into the water of life to grow bigger, propagating the sea or lake with more fish like themselves.

Jesus wants us to be successful fishers of men, catching men, telling them about Jesus, and then throwing them back into the water to grow bigger.

How has your fishing been lately? Where have you been fishing and what have the results been? What techniques are you using to catch your fish?

Sportsmen's Tip of the Day

Checking fishing reports can be a good source for information about how the fishing has been. An even better source of information is checking with fishing guides in the area where you're planning to fish. Call them. A good guide doesn't mind giving out reliable information. He or she knows that you're a possible prospect for booking trips with them. They probably won't give you exact, pinpoint locations, but they will get you in the general vicinity of where they caught fish
