I need to migrate my 3.0mm MendelMax to print 1.75mm filament, so I need
to print a new extruder to go along with the new hot-ends I just ordered
(MakerGear & Ubis, I want to compare the two). Does anyone have a
favorite 1.75mm extruder design for filament on the MendelMax 1.5, or
any I should avoid?

Also, since I'm printing out parts and taking things apart, any
suggestions for X axis upgrades I should make at the same time?

Thanks!

In case this helps anyone else...it took me quite a while (and several
printed parts that didn't work right) to find parts that worked together
well.

Here's what I ended up with for the X carriage upgrade:

Supa Flat X Carriage with opposing Fan mount:

SDP bearing mount for Y-axis:

Adjustable Belt Tightener:

...and for the extruder, I used a 1.75 mm version of jonaskuehling's
Greg's Wade reloaded:

...but I'm seriously considering switching to an airtripper V3 extruder,
either by switching to a bowden setup or by adding a mount to make it
direct drive similar to:

Charles -

Not sure you came across http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:187402.  It has recesses under the X Carriage for the SDP flange.  This minimizes binding and eliminates bearing coming free from their bearing holders.  We have found it reliable.  We also have several fan designs.

Happy Printing!

I hadn't see that, it looks nice! I didn't have a problem with the
bearings, because I used the thicker holders. I also print my first
layer somewhat squished, which made a perfect edge to lock into the
holding groove on the SDP bearings.

I also have the belt in front on my MendelMax, so having the dual mounts
so I can put the fan in the back (and see what I'm printing again!) was
a pretty big deal when I found it. :)

I would definitely recommend using something other than the 1.75mm
version of Wade's. It works OK, but there seems to be too much distance
between the 'push' point of the hobbed gear and the guide for the
filament getting to the hot end. It seems if the hot-end begins to jam,
the filament will fold over in this open space, and then it's jammed for
good (it's happened about 4 times so far while printing 1 Kg of plastic).
