Hello,
I have a MendelMax 1.5 that I am upgrading right now to larger size and I have seen the 1.5+ y axis and bed upgrade to linear rail car type design from what I am using right now with the 2 smooth rods and linear bearings. I can not find a good article that describes what advantage there is between the 1.5 bed and the 1.5+ bed. Is it more ridged, accurate, smoother?
Thanks for any info

When building my MM 1.5, I upgraded to a Trinity Lab linear slide before completing the build, so I can't really weigh in on the differences.  One immediate observation was that linear slide was both smoother and had less "flex".  Assuming that you have gotten the rods parallel and level along with high quality bearings, it should be just fine.  I was having issues with rods not being parallel and binding near the end of their travel. If you look at a machine like the Lulzbot, I believe they use rods.  Maker Tool Works uses slide.

Hope that helps.

The y-axis carries very tiny static and dynamic loads, so flex is somewhat irrelevant. I don't own one, but from my perspective, the main advantage is that its easier to align the carriage so that it runs more smoothly. Really, this is a problem that could be solved on most peoples printers by simply splitting the part that mounts the y-rods so that you have more adjustability. I haven't actually experienced this though, but if you are, you might try modifying the part instead.

With the liner car does it vibrate less? The reason I ask is now I have my firmware and Slic3r speeds dialed in and I notice during rapid XY-Jerk the existing smooth rail design I am using which is the same as other MM 1.5 the bed vibrates and my only real concern I have is if there is flex enough to cause variations in thickness. I do not see it in my prints but accuracy is always my concern for the parts I am building.
Thank you for the responses

My X travel vibrated on my Mendelmax 1.5, but only in one direction.  I tightened the X belt, and the problem went away.  I haven’t had any vibration in my Y axis, and I have the 1.5 rail/car.
