How to Upgrade Settlements in Third Age Total War 4.0

Third Age Total War 4.0 is an unofficial continuation of the popular Lord of the Rings mod for Medieval II: Total War - Kingdoms. It adds many new features, changes some existing ones and fixes many bugs from the original version. One of the new features is the settlement upgrade mechanic, which allows each faction to improve their cities and castles in different ways.

In this article, we will explain how to upgrade settlements in Third Age Total War 4.0, what benefits they provide and what requirements they have. We will also give some tips and tricks on how to optimize your settlement management and expansion.

Why Upgrade Settlements?

Upgrading settlements is important for several reasons. First of all, it allows you to unlock new buildings, units and technologies that can give you an edge over your enemies. For example, upgrading a city to a large city will enable you to build a blacksmith, which can improve your weapons and armor. Upgrading a castle to a citadel will allow you to recruit elite units like Swan Knights or Uruk-hai Berserkers.

Secondly, upgrading settlements will increase your income, population and public order. A larger settlement will have more trade routes, more taxes and more people to recruit from. It will also have more happiness and law bonuses, which will reduce the chances of rebellions and corruption.

Thirdly, upgrading settlements will make them more defensible and prestigious. A higher level of walls and towers will make it harder for enemies to siege and assault your settlements. A higher level of culture and religion will make it easier for you to convert and assimilate conquered regions. A higher level of fame and influence will make it more likely for other factions to respect and ally with you.

How to Upgrade Settlements?

To upgrade a settlement, you need to meet two requirements: population and culture. Population is the number of people living in your settlement, which grows over time depending on factors like fertility, immigration, plague and war. Culture is the percentage of your faction's influence in your settlement, which increases over time depending on factors like buildings, agents, events and diplomacy.

You can check the population and culture of your settlement by clicking on it on the campaign map and looking at the information panel on the bottom left corner. You can also see the next level of upgrade and the required population and culture for it.

Once you meet the requirements, you can click on the upgrade button on the top right corner of the information panel. This will start the construction of a new settlement level, which will take several turns depending on your faction's building speed. You can cancel the upgrade at any time by clicking on the cancel button.

Each faction has different levels of settlement upgrades, ranging from villages to huge cities for cities and from wooden castles to citadels for castles. Each faction also has different costs and benefits for upgrading settlements, depending on their culture and playstyle. For example, Gondor has cheaper and faster upgrades for cities than castles, while Mordor has cheaper and faster upgrades for castles than cities.

Tips and Tricks

Here are some tips and tricks on how to optimize your settlement management and expansion:

    • Plan ahead: Before you upgrade a settlement, think about what buildings and units you want to unlock and what resources you need to afford them. Also consider the strategic value of your settlement's location and how it affects your relations with other factions.
    • Balanced development: Try to balance your development between cities and castles, as they provide different benefits and drawbacks. Cities are better for income, trade and culture, while castles are better for recruitment, defense and religion.
    • Specialize: You don't need to build everything in every settlement. Instead, specialize your settlements according to their role and location. For example, build economic buildings in rich regions, military buildings in border regions and cultural buildings in central regions.
    • Diversify: Don't rely on one type of unit or building for your army or economy. Instead, diversify your options by building different types of units or buildings in different settlements. For example, build cavalry units in flat regions, archer units in forested regions and siege units in mountainous regions.
