Centre LSD-WRAPA Hosts High-Level Conference on Civic Space and Elections in Nigeria

The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) in partnership with the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), and with support from the MacArthur Foundation, will on Tuesday, 29th April host a high-level virtual conference of thought leaders from across Nigeria to address pressing national challenges -  deepening poverty, declining electoral credibility, and shrinking civic space.

Nigeria is currently grappling with complex socio-political issues that hinder both democratic governance and socio-economic development. According to recent estimates, approximately 63% of Nigerians ie about 133 million people are multidimensionally poor, facing multiple deprivations in health, education, and living conditions. Concerns surrounding the credibility of the 2023 elections continue to linger including increasing restrictions on civic engagement which appear to be endangering the future of democratic freedoms.

This conference aims to critically reflect on these intersecting issues and foster dialogue among stakeholders, thought leaders, and policymakers to propose sustainable solutions.

According to Mr. Itia Otabor, Director of Strategy at Centre LSD “This conference has become imperative, given the impact of these tripartite issues on the well-being of citizens,”
