CENTRE LSD COMMENCES IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SECOND PHASE OF STAGE PROJECT IN AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE

The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy & Development (Centre LSD) in Partnership with International Peace and Civic Responsibility Centre (IPCRC) Awka, in collaboration with Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room with support from UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) under its project “Strengthening Transparency, Accountability in Governance and Electoral Process (STAGE) will on Thursday, February 22, 2024 host a  Dialogue with Political parties and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
The event is a key activity in the implementation of the phase two (2) of the project.

A press statement by the project lead and the Director of Strategy at the Centre, Mr. Itia Otabor stated that the project is aimed at galvanizing stakeholders towards ensuring the conduct of Local Government Elections in the State in 2024. It comes against the backdrop that Local Government Elections were last conducted in Anambra State on Saturday 11th January 2014.

Currently the twenty-one (21) Local Government Areas in the State do not have elected Chairmen or Councillors, as successive Governors have continued to appoint Caretaker Committees, in clear violation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The current administration of Prof Chukwuma Soludo having made a firm commitment to ensure the conduct of Local Government Elections in the State, this dialogue thus focusses on rejuvenating the interest of Political parties and their members for constitutional Governance at this very important tier of Government.

The event will bring together key political party stakeholders and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to conscientize them to live up to their responsibilities ahead of the conducted of the election.

He enjoins all citizens particularly Ndi Anambra to partner with them towards ensuring that Local Government elections are conducted to deepen democratic practices and good governance in Anambra State. The public can follow activities on the project implementation on in...@centrelsd.org and through Centre LSD social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter: @centrelsd.

Mr. Monday Osasah, FSM
Executive Director,
