The Infamous Zill Drill with Ziah Noon – 2:00 p.m. $30 (pre-reg)
Class begins with drills to connect feet, hands and arm movement
together while playing zils. These drills are useful to integrate into
your weekly classes. After we are warmed up we will go through
breakdown of rhythms and learning appropriate accents within the
rhythms to build improvisational skills. All students will be amazed
at their zill playing at the end of the workshop. The rhythms covered
in this class will help students be more aware of the rhythms used in
Middle Eastern music. This workshop is the pre-requisite for the
Maqamat workshop with Majda Anwar.
Emoting to the Middle Eastern Music through Dance: An Exploration of
the Maqamat with Majda Anwar 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. $30 (pre-reg)
In Middle Eastern music, musicians strive for Tarab, or “enchantment”,
of the audience. The idea of Tarab spans all arts of the Middle East –
including dance. In this workshop, Majda will introduce basic theory
of the Middle Eastern Maqmat, or musical modes, in order for dancers
to recognize the difference between the major modal families of
maqamat. In addition to ear training and getting used to the quarter
tone system that makes the maqamat unique, dancers will also be guided
through how to emote these different modes. Guided interpretations of
the music will help dancers meet the interpretive expectations of
Middle Eastern audiences and also how to present Middle Eastern music
to the non-Middle Eastern audience.
