Hello all, I have just joined this group. I am searching for a MEMS reader that I can run on my Ubuntu 24.04 laptop. I found some Github repositories but am not able to get a running version. I also found an online tool (memsfcr) but this one also does not run well on my laptop. Any suggestions?

Memsfcr has a version for Windows and one for Mac.   So how were you running it?

Got it: you’ll have run the web version of memsfcr in a browser.

All I can suggest is perhaps also contacting some of the people on the memsfcr credits page

But, James Portman might not respond because I have tried to contact him twice over the last year or so with no success, whereas previously he always quickly responded.

And I forgot to say: welcome to the community.

Indeed: I was hoping that the browser-based version would run on my laptop. Unfortunately it did not recognize the connected serial-to-USB adapter. My laptop does "see" this adapter being present. But memsfcr gives an error message when I'm pushing the "Connect" button: it says that no connection can be found. That website has a "contact us" page and I have sent a message there. So far have I not yet received a response. Which made me look for other available alternatives. During that search I found this forum.

Hi,

I’m the author of Memsfcr. In theory there’s no reason why it shouldn’t compile and run under Ubuntu. I’ll give it a try and let you know. In the meantime have you tried web.memsfcr.co.uk? That does work, so if it’s not discovering your adapter that maybe where the issue lies. In my experience not all diagnostic cables bought online are equal.

Hello Andrew, thank you for reacting. Just today I did some further experimenting. If I use the online version at web.memsfcr I get an error message: a red box saying that either no adapter is found, or not found on the defined serial port. Then I tried a different approach: I installed wine on my laptop, downloaded the Windows version of your software and ran it, using wine. It opens a Firefox window which looks the same as the online version, but it is a local version at 127.0.0.1. Now the bahaviour is slightly different: when pushing the "Connect" button I get a pop-up window with a long list of COM port numbers. From wine I know that by default they link /dev/ttyUSB0 (the mounting point of the serial-to-USB converter) to port COM33. When selecting COM33 I no longer get the red error message (when I select another port number I do get the error message). So this is one step forward: the software "sees" the adapter. However, no data is displayed on the memsfcr dashboard ( the Mini is running at idle rpm).
The serial-to-USB adapter I have is based on the CH340 chip. Has this chip successfully been used by others? Or is this a known non-functioning product type?
