The children of a woman who viciously abused them as children and harassed them even as adults have written a scathing obituary in a Reno newspaper delighting in her death.  Should this be off limits?
Is it in poor taste?  Apparently one of her daughters submitted it, with the approval of at least one of her siblings from what I can read.

I don't know the current religious affiliations of the children, but if they are Christian, I'd say this is definitely in contrast to what it teaches.  Even if they are not, what do you think of this type of reaction?  Is an obituary an appropriate place for these types of comments:

"On behalf of her children whom she so abrasively exposed to her evil and violent life, we celebrate her passing from this earth and hope she lives in the afterlife reliving each gesture of violence, cruelty, and shame that she delivered on her children."

While I can't possibly understand what they went through, I still don't know if an obituary is the place for anyone to vent or celebrate in this way.

In poor taste? Maybe. Deserved? Absolutely.

The only "afterlife" out there is what people will say about you once you no longer have the chance to offer a retort.

The moral:  try not to be an asshole.

I can totally understand their feelings if they were severely abused. Given that the obit stuck to their own feelings, I don't think it should be off limits due to first amendment rights. If they were slandering a living person with untruths, then that would be questionable.

As a last resort, as is often the case, lets resort to reason. The deceased didn't mind it one bit. The children evidently found it cathartic to vent, and they needed the the support, the understanding, and the recognition that came with it. Perhaps this story will help people intervene in cases of child abuse elsewhere, and something good will come of it. Might there be living relatives that are hurt by this? Perhaps, but there is a long standing tradition and logic as to why a persons children are prominently given a speaking opportunity at their funeral. They have the inside story; they knew her best.
