I saw a TED talk about this. Or heard one. You know how Extra Chunky
sauce is a thing? It wasn't in the seventies. There were two
companies, one was Ragu and the other was Prego, and everyone ate
Prego. So Ragu hired a guy to figure out what people liked. He first
polled people to find what they liked, and no one said Chunky. What's
interesting, though, is what they liked when doing a taste test. He
made all sorts of different kinds of tomato sauce by all the criteria
you can imagine. It turned out that 33% (or was it 25%) of people
preferred chunky tomato sauce. Ragu's sales shot up and Prego hired
him to teach him

the point is, people are terrible at knowing what they really want.
