Messiah is now the 4th most popular boys infant name, but don't bother explaining that to a Tennessee judge. He's here to spare us from parents with flawed judgement. Their child will be named Martin, whether they like it or not. Tennessee tax $ at work, establishing the law of the land... I consider this thread a public service reminder, about where you live.

I think it's actually the 4th among the fastest rising baby names, not 4th overall.  If the judge just stopped at saying the name change was to prevent the child from being persecuted as he grows up, one could at least debate whether it is a violation of the Constitution.  But the judge's additional comments seem to be a clear violation of the principle of separation of church and state: "The word Messiah is a title and it's a title that has only been earned by one person and that one person is Jesus Christ," the judge said.

This is really off topic, but recently I was looking for some different music to listen to in my car.  One of the ones I found was an old album by the doom metal Candlemass, whose singer at the time was named Messiah Marcolin.  That was his stage name of course, but I doubt any magistrate in Sweden would require a name change like the Tennessee ones do.

Good stuff, but may make you depressed:

I think the Judge was a woman.

Yes, the judge was a woman so she is here to spare us from poor parental judgment.
