Hi! My name is Kim and my daughter who is seven absolutely loves astronomy. She will watch youtube videos about planets for hours. I want to get her a telescope for christmas (one that is about $100 or less, if possible). I know that Mr. Diaz is doing a presentation on this very topic on Dec 4, but unfortunately I will be out of town. Can someone give me some pointers? Or better yet- just tell me which one to buy? I have never owned a telescope- so something that is easy to use would be best. Thank you in advance for your help! Kim

Hi Kim,

Have a look at this website. Lots of information, but it's probably the best beginner telescope guide I've seen:

I agree with Michael here!

My presentation has the same approach as the website: better than a cheap telescope maybe better a good pair of binoculars.

$100 isn't much of a budget for a scope.  If you can stretch to $113.59, the Orion SkyScanner 100mm reflector would be a reasonable (albeit not ideal) option in that price range.  You will need a very stable and sturdy surface, though, as it is a "table top" scope without a traditional tripod.

Thank you so much for your help! I actually ended up getting her some binoculars- I thought that was a really good idea. I got these:
I also got her some kid friendly beginning astronomy books. Thank you again! Kim

Good call on the binoculars. Those will be useful for years to come. Also, even better - the books. Spencer and I still use some of the very first books we bought for him.

If you schedule (and the sky) allows, definitely try to bring her out to one of the December observing sessions on the 5th or the 12th. There's always a wide array of telescopes (and a pair of binoculars or two) to look through and plenty of experience and expertise to go around.
Best of all, the sessions are free.
