I'm currently a Comcast customer.  I like the speed, and I *would* like the price if I could just pay for Internet access alone.  I have not attached the coax to a television since I moved to this house in '07.  :-(  Anyone know of alternatives that have similar speed for under $55/month?  AT&T DSL's advertising claims half the bandwidth... Earthlink (over Comcast lines) also claims half the bandwidth, but if anyone is a local customer, what kind of speeds do you get?  Any nicely priced options I'm not aware of?

Thanks,
--Greg

When I had Comcast as of 6 months ago I was getting the 8M down as advertised for the high-tier home account. I have DSL now in another part of the metro area from AT&T at about 3M down.

I pay 84.95 flat for business class 16mbit/2mbit (before powerboost) with static IP and get a bunch of freebie add-ons that I don't use (exchange boxes, web space etc).  They route you a /30 or use their built in NAT.  When powerboost kicks in I've clocked downloads at 3.5MB/sec but I can pull a sustained 2MB/sec indefinitely and reliably.

The support for business class is great - no fumbling through menu options and dealing with poor support.  I get 4 hour turnaround on line techs and 24x7 tier2 support from people who don't suck.

Also no "soft cap" of 250gb for business class like consumer - although I probably push a few gigs max since I'm not a big downloader.

Also with business class you can have "just internet"..if a sales person tries to tell you "we only sell packages" they are lying and just trying to increase their commissions...ask for someone else. Unfortunately there is a two contract involved if you want to get "free installation" otherwise installation is $199. Comes by default with dynamic IP. Side note: You don't have to use the built-in NAT...just tell the technician when they install/configure the device to leave it all "wide open" if you want to use your own firewall.

I think we have the same package you do, with 16Mbps down and 2Mbps up
(plus whatever the line can do for a few megabytes of the beginning of a
transfer)

Our total bill is $62.95

We got a call about a year ago about how having basic cable is cheaper,
and they might have added it, but the bill hasn't changed and we don't
have a tuner card hooked up to know if we have it or not...

U-verse might be an option, looks like their 18Mbps package starts at
$55... but YMMV as to the speed on VDSL

Oh, btw, it doesn't come without TV... but Comcast just called me and
offered 22Mbit for $2 more

I called back and asked for 50Mbit because I'm a glutton.

How much does that come out to be? I need to readdress my bill with them anyhow.

22/5 is $65ish?

I'm not gonna be able to tell you how much the 50/10 is, because I won't
look at the bill. I'll have it autodraft and pretend I got a pay cut.
