autonumber "key" field possible?

Is there a way to make a key or id field that gets a unique auto number? I'm looking to create a log where a physical sample is assigned a unique sequential number without having to manually assign. Also, is there a way to enforce unique values? Any direction or help is appreciated

OK, i figured it out. You need to add a field that is field type integer with default value set to 0 and "autoincrement" checked on.
