Grateful for advice on how best to share a memento database that uses a lot of photos.

I have created a database, currently of around 400, entries that uses around 800 images (it is a wildflower database).  The intention was to be able to share/give this to others with an interest in wildflowers.  However I am now unclear as to how best to share such a large database as the location of the images seems to be a key issue.  The current database on my phone knows the location of my flower images folder.  However even if I can transfer all 800 images to a friend's phone how do we ensure that the database looks in the right place?  Manually changing all 800 entries seems too laborious as does running a script on a Google Docs document.

Hopefully there is a simple way that has eluded me.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Simply:

- create a memento user id

- select the database
- context menu > publish the library
- create a name(alias)

Share the unique ID with friends (example wetmike#databasename)

They can download memento for free & subscribe to your library.

Thanks for the response Murdy.

I am sorry if I am asking basic questions, please forgive me if I am.

However once I have uploaded my data through publishing it, would the other users need to always access the database online or is the data, including photos, downloaded to their device?  If it is downloaded to their device (so that they can use it out in the countryside far away from data signals) how does the software know where the images are stored as the naming/numbering of storage locations on devices seems variable.

I do not currently have access to a second device that I can get to try this on.  Hence the idiot boy questions.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Murdy,

I have uploaded my data through publishing (it's a cd database with some pictures). The pictures are uploaded to Picasa (according to the message on the screen during uploading).

My friend can download the library, all the records (it's downloaded to his device). But he never get the pictures (from Picasa).

So there are NO pictures.

Any idea???

WetMike,

If you like me to test something...please let me know

Thanks for the offer of the test Quirinus, but I think you have done it already!

Your result is what I was concerned would happen.

Hopefully Murdy can point us both to a way around this problem.

Wetmike,

  Try this.

On your momento, sync your library to google Spreadsheet.
On your friend's phone, under the phone setting, log in your google account. Un-sync everything. We just need your account log in.
Then, open your friend's momento, tap + to add new library.
  Choose add from Google Drive.
  choose your sync database.
Once added, wait for all data to be synced including photos.
After syncing is done. Unlink your friend's memento from your google account.
then, under phone setting, log out your google account.

This way, your friend will get all your data + photos. But he won't get new update if you have key in new data.
Optionally if you trust your friend, you can leave your google account log on.
Another option is to create a new google account ( seperated from your private account) that you share with your friend and use that to sync the data.

Hope this is helpful :-)

Thanks for the suggestion matsuru mok.

Sorry about the delay in responding but I had hoped that Murdy would come back and comment.

I have not got a spare phone to try your idea at the moment.  It might work but I have two concerns the first is that every time a friend wants to get a copy of my database I have to log on to my Google Account via their phone - not something I am going to do.  The second is what I see as the main issue and was hoping that Murdy would comment on.  When the images are synced down from the google docs where are they put (i.e. which folder) and how does Memento know where they are?  Different phones seem to have different naming conventions on SD cards and to even if I put all the photos in the folder "Memento" on the SD card how can I know what it will be called?

I had wondered if there were a default folder that might work possibly related in some way to the location of the actual database or if OI File Manager could be used in some way.  I note that if I have OI File Manager loaded it will put new images in a predefined folder, sadly it seems to leave all the existing images where they were.

So thanks to all who have made suggestions but unless Murdy or anyone else can come up with a better suggestion it appears that I cannot reliably share a database containing images with others.  Which seems sad.  :-(

I hope to be proved wrong.

At last I got round to trying this on another phone Matsuru Mok.

All seemed to work well until I disconnected from the internet then any photos I had not looked at while online could not be found.  :-(

So as far as I can tell there is no simple way to share databases with a lot of photos.  Which is sad.  :-(

I remain hopeful that someone will prove me wrong.  ;-)

I also discovered the following:

Delete your pictures and spreadsheet from Google Docs.

Start 'Sync with Google Docs'
Memento will create a new sheet with all the records (that's fine)
Memento doesn't send the (old) pictures again. The picture folder stays empty.

The problem doesn't exists with new (not send before) pics. These will be send to Google Docs.

I know this is an old topic, but I will post because I was looking for other options on the same subject, so it is possible that others will in the future as well.  The best way I have found so far to share images included in the database is to save the images to google drive (with visibility options set to "public on the Web" or "anyone with the link" in the Share dialog). Then, I go into an excel file, and copy all the image addresses.  I then do a replace of "/edit" to "", and replace "http://docs.google.com/file/d/" to "http://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=" in order to be able to view the images online.  There are 2 problems here, though: (1) the thumbnails will not show up, and (2) the images are not stored in the device (so you need a connection to see them).  If anyone here knows how to be able to share the images (via picasa or some other way) that actually stores the images on the device, please let me know, as I am interested...
