Good morning thanks to all who guided me through the path of calculations for my library.. As I declared earlier Im very much a novice but love this app so decided to take the plunge to educate my self if I can,, of course with help from such forums

Im creating a patient reporting system that hopefully can be accessed through phone and tablets,,, maybe PC

Currently I have 4 libraries 

1. PRF

2. OBS

3. GCS

4. NEWS 2

The PRF is where the patients date of birth and Surname are held, the other libraries are linked one to many but only filled if necessary for that patient.. To ensure that the linked record is correct I would like to have the surname and possible DOB across the linked libraries... is this possible ?` if so could someone offer guidance on how to complete

I got very frustrated upon reading your message, which has me exasperated & amped up. I'm not angry, and I'll settle down, but please understand I'm just exasperated and don't have any rancor toward you in any way...

I appreciate that you're learning the best you can, but what's frustrating to me is my never having enough context to keep from feeling like I have to go on a sleuth mission to discover info you could have just told us.

What is PRF? Patient Referral Form?

What is OBS? I can't guess at all about that one.

GCS. You mentioned this before, but I forgot; it's certainly not mnemonic.

NEWS 2. I never knew what this is and still don't. Why did you think we would have any way of knowing? Did I miss a class or something?

Yes, I have quite a bit of hospital & clinic automation experience, but the AMA has a set of standard terms, and each institution that has developed a system has its own terms for things, so the assumption that everybody knows all the names you use for things is just wrong.

Also, mainly back in old mainframe days, but still in some places, people acronym their names for things, but in modern times, we tend to name things for what they are -- usually based on the primary key / entry name. It leads to good database design, and the terms are meaningful to both insiders & outsiders. So, my libraries have names like Patients, Caregivers, Medications, and so on. Each of these has an ID / primary key / entry name that may be made up of multiple fields but which are usually but not always unique. While library names are plural (describing what's inside), n-1 (one-to-many) links are the singular of the same term, while n-n (many-to-many) links generally have the same plural name as the target library.

I know you are probably working within a system that already has all the names cast in stone, but given that, why not educate us on what that naming convention is?

I also appreciate that you are now telling us what system or process you're automating, but we're still short on information.

Ja, ich habe ziemlich viel Erfahrung in der Automatisierung von Krankenhäusern und Kliniken, aber die AMA hat eine Reihe von Standardbegriffen, und jede Institution, die ein System entwickelt hat, hat ihre eigenen Begriffe für Dinge, daher wird davon ausgegangen, dass jeder alle Namen kennt, die Sie verwenden  denn die Dinge sind einfach falsch.

Außerdem hauptsächlich in alten Mainframe-Tagen, aber an einigen Stellen werden ihre Namen für Dinge abgekürzt, aber in modernen Zeiten neigen wir dazu, Dinge nach dem zu benennen, was sie sind - normalerweise basierend auf dem Primärschlüssel / Eintragsnamen.  Dies führt zu einem guten Datenbankdesign, und die Begriffe sind sowohl für Insider als auch für Außenstehende von Bedeutung.  Meine Bibliotheken haben also Namen wie Patienten, Pflegekräfte, Medikamente und so weiter.  Jedes davon hat eine ID / einen Primärschlüssel / einen Eintragsnamen, der aus mehreren Feldern bestehen kann, die jedoch normalerweise, aber nicht immer eindeutig sind.  Während Bibliotheksnamen im Plural stehen (beschreiben, was drin ist), sind n-1 (eins-zu-viele) Links der Singular desselben Begriffs, während nn (viele-zu-viele) Links im Allgemeinen denselben Pluralnamen wie die Zielbibliothek haben.

Ich weiß, dass Sie wahrscheinlich in einem System arbeiten, das bereits alle Namen in Stein gemeißelt hat, aber warum sollten wir uns angesichts dieser Namenskonvention nicht aufklären?

Ich weiß es auch zu schätzen, dass Sie uns jetzt mitteilen, welches System oder welchen Prozess Sie automatisieren, aber uns fehlen immer noch die Informationen.

Bill I agree, I didnt mention NEWS or OBS as my QUESTIONS related to calculations and linking.. but truly understand these forums can be frustraing

Thanks for bearing with my frustration & long message, and thanks for the info. People back in the day, the tables these libraries correspond to were named for the forms used in their previous manual system, unfortunately, and the tables modeled on (agh!) & named after the forms. Sigh.

And thanks for the names. I'll assume the one-to-many links include one from GCS to PRF.

The most straightforward way to get the fields across is to create 2 JavaScript fields in GCS, one containing field("Patient")[0].field.("DOB") and the other containing field("Patient")[0].field("Surname"), where Patient is the link from GCS to PRF.
