Dear APMP members,

I am organising a workshop titled Analysing the Role of Signs in Mathematical Inventions that will take place at Aarhus University, Denmark on June 1-2, 2026.

The workshop brings together scholars from diverse disciplines to explore whether visual aids—such as diagrams and notations—shape the development of mathematics. Importantly, the aim is also to address methodological questions: How can we analyse (mathematical) signs to determine their role? What tools do disciplines such as semiotics, the history and philosophy of mathematics, cognitive science, information science, and mathematics education provide for this analysis?

Invited Speakers

• Silvia De Toffoli (IUSS Pavia, Italy)

• Valeria Giardino (Institut Jean Nicod, Paris, France)

• Marcus Giaquinto (UCL, London, UK)

• Véronique Izard (Université Paris Cité, France)

• Jemma Lorenat (Pitzer College, Claremont, CA, USA)

• Atsushi Shimojima (Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan)

• Dirk Schlimm (McGill, Montreal, Canada)

Everyone is welcome to attend - but registration is required. Note: physical attendance only.
