Hi, I'm using AutoCAD 2016 on Windows 10. I'm having a problem whereby new drawings open in different windows (see image "Actual Configuration"), but I'd like them to open in different tabs (see image "Desired Configuration").

What I found is that I do not have to set the taskbar or the SDI. All I do is click on the windows logo in the bottom right hand side select all programs, Select AutoCAD folder and select the AutoCAD application and this launches a new instant of AutoCAD. All I have to do is open the file within that Instant. If I want another instant I repeat the steps above. I don't go through the File Explorer other wise it will open in the opened AutoCAD.

I guess I'll have to finally upgrade to LT 2015/16 as my ancient LT 98 will not install on Windows 10 Pro. It last ran on XP Pro which I still have on my other laptop. Any one know any way to run the old programs under Windows 10? I've tried the XP emulation but it doesn't work for LT 98. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip but that only works for 32-bit programs to run on 64-bit systems. LT 98 is a 16-bit program (I told you it was ancient and was first made to run on Windows 98!) and works perefectly under XP Pro which still had a 16-bit compatibility emulation. I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy a new LT.

I tried the compatibility mode in my Windows 10 Pro 64-bit but it will not work and I'm not about to buy another version of Windows 10 (32-bit). I did contact Longbow Software and Lex Steel said that their Converter should work for this on Windows 10 so thanks to Darren P. in the post above for that tip. I decided that if I'm going to have to buy a new program, I might as well buy one that will work in my 64-bit Windows 10 environment right out of the box. I researched a lot of different programs and ended up buying TurboCAD Deluxe 2D/3D v21 which has 64-bit compatibility and also does way more for the money than AutoCAD LT 2013 and several others. I can still use my AutoCAD LT98 on my old laptop and the results are compatible with TurboCAD Deluxe 2D/3D v21 on my new laptop so I'm very happy with my choice... ;

I have AutoCAD LT98 running on Window 10 Pro 64 bit (version 1903) in Windows 98 compatibility mode. I used a 32 bit installer I found on the internet. I had to copy some files from an old windows XP computer with AutoCAD LT98 running on it. It seems to run flawlessly with an occasional crash when opening a file. I did this for a friend. I personally have newer versions of AutoCAD. I found the information to do this by searching the internet.

I remember that I also had to copy some file from an old Windows XP computer with These programs running sucessfully on them. Without that I couldn't get it to run. Its been about 6 months since I did it so I don't remember all the details but the AutoCAD LT98 and 2000 are running today. I am sure you can figure it out.

I remember I had to go to the old XP computer where AutoCAD LT98 was running successfully and copy all the files in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk shared" to the Windows 10 Pro directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk shared" on the new computer. This is where the missing DLLs are.

I evaluated TurboCAD Deluxe 2D/3D v? and found it could not do what I needed to do that I do so easily with AutoCad 2000 and LT2002 which is to attach raster files, draw over them with polylines of specific thickness and output to a jpg or png file with specific lineweights.

I actually own 2 copies of AutoCAD LT98. One I bought and one Autodesk gave me because I found and reported an error in AutoCAD LT98. The one they gave me has the error corrected. I don't us them because AutoCAD LT2002 is so much better. Check to see if our copy of LT98 inserts blocks accurately to a snap point.

If you find Autodesk software subscriptions too expensive, there are many other CAD packages out there with no subscription options (initial cost may still be comparably high) that you can go get and use.

Autocad 2017 seems to have decided that it is the only program I need to look at on all of my multiple workspaces in windows 10. Once I make Autocad the active window, if I attempt to use the task view button on the task bar or the winkey+ctrl key command it just shows Autocad as the only thing on all of my spaces. I use these spaces to seperate different types of programs and workflows or to have quick access to information that might be pertinant to what I am working on without having to change the "active" window in order to see it.

I believe that Win10 is the first version to support multiple worskapces. It's been a *Nix thing for years, but IIRC it's not been implemented in Windows before. I would guess that was not something that was considered before shipping.

Win 10 was the first version with multiple desktops being built into the system, as for whether or not it works with other versions of autocad I am not sure. I have only just started using Autocad again the last version I used was probably sometime around 2007? it was in highschool. Regardless, I have several other cad programs that I use often that allow me to switch between spaces without any trouble.

I wonder if it has something to do with then large number of dialoge boxes and inputs that making windows think that it is still the active window when using multi tasking key commands. Like trying to use alt-tab when you are still inputing data for a line?

Big was my disappointment though, when I found Autodesk products don't have the functionality. Not only that, but they seem to be the only software that doesn't support virtual desktops, amongst many standard third party software applications that our company use.

Considering recent events with upgrades and updates causing problems with AutoCAD, I find that hard to believe. I wouldn't hold your breath counting on a patch. New Windows features have historically been addressed in future versions and not the very next one. I'm pretty sure 4K resolution is still not supported.

I just wanted to chip in, you can use multiple monitors as well as multiple desktops. I have three monitors and three separate desktops and each screen is used on all desktops. You can also drag and drop programs between different screens and by hitting Windows+Tab you can see all of your desktops and programs and switch quickly.

There is no issue with the desktops when using any version of Revit (14-17), but it does happen on both Autocad 16 and 17. I have noticed that if only one tab is open in CAD it only shows up in the one window it is supposed to. The moment you open another drawing CAD shows up in all desktops. I really hope we get a fix for this issue soon.

I use AutoCAD 2018 and this problem still persists on the 2018 version. To conform, setting the TASKBAR command to 0 as AMiltenburg suggested works on AutoCAD 2018. does anyone know if there will be an update to fix this problem?

My company recently upgraded to Windows 7 and 10. I cannot get AutoCAD 2000 to install on the Windows 10 machine. Is there any easy solution for this problem that isn't going to cost our company a lot of money for an upgrade?

AutoCAD 2000 is not supported to run under Windows 10 and most likely you will have to go this route in order for it to work. Also AutoCAD 2000 was released 17 years ago.. Did you assume a 17 yr old application was just going to run on a new operating system? Did anybody test drive this before going to Windows 10?

Hello. This is a really old install. This is 18 years out of development and the operating system it was designed for was discontinued by Microsoft some time ago. If you could get it installed, I imagine you would have difficulty activating it as well. We support the current version and three back, so this is really pretty far outside what we normally see.

Is it possible that it could work on Windows 10? It is possible, if you have the install media, I suppose, but there is 18 years of development from the Operating System through the Antivirus you have to contend with.

For me, could never get Windows 95 to work, one crash after another, 98SE finally got it right, but this was four years after 98 was introduced. 2000, Mellium, and Vista were bad jokes. Took them about four years to get XP working with service pack 3, AutoCad 2000 ran well and still had a parallel port for my plotter with the correct drivers.

But sure a down turn with 98SE, could run both my DOS and Windows programs on it, but completely worthless on the internet today. Windows 7, is kind of okay, runs most of my old software with Microsoft compatibility. Manage to run AutoCad 2000 on it, by installing it directly off my old hard drive, but have to hit of all things, acl1st15.dll to open it. Copied the Autodesk Shared directory to the Program x86 Common directory, leaving off other details, did not take notes, not even sure how I got here.
