Half-caste bandit Omkara Shukla abducts his lady love, Dolly Mishra, from her family. Thanks to his cleverness, he gets away with the kidnapping. A conspiracy, however, forms against him when he denies his right-hand man, Langda Tyagi, a promotion. Ultimately, this plot threatens not only his relationship with Dolly, but their lives and those of their associates as well.

You know when you dismiss a film on the grounds of ridiculous assumptions? I'll be honest and say that I did that with Omkara. I just assumed that it, and in honesty, most Bollywood films were narratively driven by terrible songs; and seriously that shouldn't even be a problem, some of my favourite Disney films (basically all of them) have relied, and used musical numbers very effectively.

That's not the sole reason here though; the other being that this is an adaptation of a certain William Shakespeare play, Othello. Was I expecting some Bollywood dancing fused with a bit of Shakespeare?

Othello might be my favorite Shakespearean play (that I've read). The moment where Othello strangles Desdemona* is one of the most intense moments in fiction, a brutal piece of painful passion that is all the more agonizing because it is entirely from Othello's point of view. It's a sickening fall from grace. The challenge for anyone adapting Shakespeare's work is to capture the beauty and skill of his language. Foreign (to Shakespeare) language adaptations are a bit tricky for someone who doesn't speak the language. It's hard to judge how the poetry of his dialogue has translated when you've only subtitles to judge on--and I will not begrudge a film for my own ignorance.

Well, this is probably why I love watching movies. I started Vishal Bharadwaj's Shakespeare Trilogy from the opposite way, not that it makes any difference. I have fallen head over heels for this guy's work. After watching Haider, I felt this was even better. Fuck why am I even comparing.

Esha Deol, who recently celebrated the special mention of her short film Ek Duaa at the 69th National Awards in the Non-Feature Films category, has opened up about some career decisions that she regrets. The actor, who boasts a career spanning more than two decades, is also known for her roles in Dhoom, LOC Kargil, No Entry and many more. During an interview, Esha shared that she regrets turning down roles in two iconic Bollywood movies.

Both Omkara (2006) and Golmaal (2006) turned out to be massive blockbusters. While Omkara earned critical acclaim and performed well at the Indian box office, Golmaal spurred a successful franchise and became one of the biggest hits of 2006.

On the professional front, Esha Deol was last seen in the web series Hunter Tootega Nahi Todega, alongside Suniel Shetty, Barkha Bisht, Karanvir Sharma, and Rahul Dev. The series is currently streaming on Amazon Mini TV.

Every once in a while there comes a movie which leaves an imprint on you. It takes you away from the daily distractions of life, and puts you in another mental zone altogether. Such movies push you to think of them not just as a mere source of entertainment, but as a detailed and fine craft, which when done perfectly, could leave you spellbound.

Mind you, making these kind of movies is an equally taxing job. A lot goes into making a film, there's no denying that. But apart from these, sometimes we get to watch a few movies which are high on talent and performance. And I can count such movies on my fingertips- Guru, Black, Gangs Of Wasseypur, or the most recent Masaan.

So, today we're going to celebrate one such movie which might not have created box office history, but was definitely a fine piece of cinema. Yes, I am talking about one of the best works of Vishal Bharadwaj till date, Omkara.

I mean, who reads a Shakespearean play and thinks, 'okay, I am gonna set it up in rural Meerut, take a bunch of really elite actors and turn them into typical villagers, and make them act like they've never before'! Perhaps Vishal Bharadwaj does.

Agreed, Ajay Devgn had always been a nice actor, but with this one, he surpassed his own level. Same goes for Kareena. In fact, I clearly remember after watching her disasters like Main Prem Ki deewani Hoon and Hulchul, I wondered how on Earth is Bharadwaj going to make her act in such a sensitive and demanding film. But again, she did her part perfectly well. It was just the right mix of emotions sprinkled with subtlety.

That, Vivek Oberoi can act, is not a myth people, trust me! If you go back in time, and care to see his debut movie Company, you'd know the fellow can act. Or could act at one point of time. With Omkara, he proved that he had that acting streak left in him. With very Bengali features, Konkona Sen too managed to nail it as a small town UP woman. Years later I still can't forget the last scene of the movie where she slashes Saif Ali's throat. The rage in her eyes still haunts me.

Imagine, even someone like Bipasha Basu did a decently well job. She looked the part, acted like it, and even danced like it! I have never seen Bipasha Basu dance as gracefully as she has in the song Namak Ishq Ka. Yes, Beedi was way more popular, but if you gotta see some graceful moves from Miss Basu, Namak is the track you'd want to see.

While Deepak Dobriyal, aka Pappiji of Tanu Weds Manu had done few movies earlier, including Maqbool, it was Omkara which got him the recognition. And although he had a minor role in it, he played it flawlessly well. Didn't I say the ensemble cast was amazing too! In fact, he bagged the Filmfare Special Performance Award that year for his portrayal of Rajju.

As a 90's kid, having watched almost all his movies, I couldn't remember even a single one in which he really stood out. And then comes Omakara in 2006, and I was like, *woooot*! Is this really Saif? And if it really is, then why on Earth wasn't he doing this kind of acting before? Or may be he was just waiting for Langda Tyagi to happen all along! Nevertheless, Saif played such an intensely negative character for the first time in his career span of (then) 14 years, and literally showed us his wow (imagine it in Saif's voice!) factor. In fact, that year he whisked away Filmfare award too for Best Villainous performance.

While this may not be a reason per se as to why this movie was a genius, but the fact that it won numerous international accolades goes on to prove that what an epic little piece of cinema it was! In fact, it won awards even in Pakistan! That itself says a lot about the film, right! It won awards at Kara Film Festival (Karachi), Cairo International Film Festival (Egypt), and at Asia Festival Of First Films. While the Indian family audiences chose to stay away from the movie, owing to the use of cuss words, Omkara was a huge success in countries like UK, South Africa, Australia, and US.
