The Vampire Diaries follows the life of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) who lives in Mystic Falls, a fictional town heavily charged with supernatural history. She falls for a handsome century-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Their lives grow more and more complicated as Stefan's vicious older vampire brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) also returns to town with a vendetta against his brother and the descendants of the town's founders. However, Damon quickly becomes their greatest ally in their fight against evil.

Of course, then we got that episode flashing back to Damon and Stefan's childhood, and we saw how much she tried to shield them from their father's abuse, which means she suffered that abuse intensely. For her own survival, she had to emotionally detach from them in order to allow herself to get away and seek a life worth living. Doesn't exactly make her mother of the year, but it does make it harder to judge her too harshly.

And having been an abused wife, she was the perfect target for a sociopathic sleazoid like Julian, who treated her just well enough to feel special...but then also emotionally abused her enough to keep her dependent and eager to please.

To keep Bonnie off the magical radar, Enzo's been dosing her with a drug he found in his pseudo-family's evil medicine cabinet. It suppresses magical abilities, but he didn't check all the contraindications; it's also totally, 100%, no exceptions, fatal. Once he learns this, he's on a mission to find another solution, because in the years of stashing her away in a cabin and drugging her, he's also fallen madly in love with her. She's gonzo for him, too, and it's actually beautiful. Their relationship is the highlight of the season.

The Phoenix Stone is part of a sword carried by an immortal(-ish) vampire hunter, Rayna Cruz. If the sword injures a vampire, Rayna can track them anywhere, forever. When the sword kills a vampire, their soul is trapped within the stone. Lily wants the stone because Julian is trapped in it. The Heretics are divided on the subject, because some love Julian, and some knew he was a sociopathic sleazoid.

Damon throws himself into this mission to buy Bonnie a second chance at life. Always good to see that, while he's a dick most of the time, Damon really will do anything for a friend, even delay his reunion with Elena.

Stefan was brooding last year, even for Stefan. He learned his first love, Valerie, had long ago been pregnant with his child (Julian is the worst!). He started to build a relationship with his mother, but that was doomed (again, because of Julian). He and Damon both got stuck in the Phoenix Stone where they were forced to live out torturous psychodramas. He fights so hard for Damon every time, yet Damon chose to sleep through his pain rather than return the favor.

His relationship with Caroline was going okay for a while, considering it started in the middle of a war zone and coincided with the return of his first love. Of course, he then got stabbed by the Phoenix Sword and had to go on the run to escape the relentless Rayna Cruz. On TVD, love bites.

Caroline continued to mourn her mother as she tried to build a relationship with Stefan. Her trademark enthusiasm was almost enough to overcome the war zone and Valerie obstacles. Then the craziness of TVD landed on her like a ton of bricks: She was magically pregnant with Alaric and Jo's twins! Turns out the Gemini coven, out in force to attend Jo's wedding, would do anything to protect the next generation: in this case, transferring the fetuses from their dying human mother to a much sturdier nearby vampire womb. Caroline and Alaric grew close as she carried his children and then moved to Texas with him to raise them far from the aforementioned craziness.

And as one of the only mortals with a real awareness of this other world going on around us, he took on the incredible responsibility of being the sheriff of an empty town overrun by Heretics. He sought to protect the world from even having to know the horrors he dealt with. He was one of the true heroes in the world of TVD, the ones with no supernatural advantage.

I should have known the finale was going to leave me speechless. (I don't even know how I'm writing this recap.) While I was watching, I felt like I was being pulled in so many different emotional directions, until the final 10 minutes, when I was pretty much devastated. There wasn't just a death; there were multiple deaths.

When Matt accidentally drove his truck off Wickery Bridge -- with Elena in his passenger's seat -- I knew that everything was going to change. Trapped under water, Elena sacrifices her life to save Matt's, just as her father had sacrificed his life to save Elena the night Stefan rescued her from her family's submerged car. Elena's "death" brought us full circle from the beginning, the night Stefan saved her and she lost her parents.

But did you really think Elena was going to die? At the end of last week's episode, she fell to the ground after suffering a head injury. It turns out that she had internal bleeding in her head, and Dr. Fell needed to use her stash of vampire blood to save her.

To be honest, I'm surprised that Elena is being turned so quickly into the series. I wasn't expecting it. Sure, I thought Tyler could die -- and he did, in a way -- or even Jeremy, but I never thought it would be Elena.

Ric may have lost his own humanity a few episode back, but tonight, it was time to say a final, bittersweet goodbye to our favorite history teacher. Although, evil Ric was causing too many problems. First, he got Mayor Lockwood and Sheriff Forbes fired, and then he told the Council about Meredith's stash of vampire blood.

But nothing can make me forgive him for killing Klaus. That's right, sweethearts. Klaus -- or more correctly, Joseph Morgan -- is gone for good. I swear, everyone cried in this episode, even Rebekah! Also, that indestructible white oak stake needs to go.

It wasn't long until Ric went after Damon, but unfortunately (or fortunately?!), he collapsed before he got a chance to finish what he started. When Elena died in the lake, Ric died too. At least he got to die in Damon's arms. Can you think of a better way to go?

Delena fans, I can here your cries from my apartment, and i just want to tell you that I feel your pain. In a surprising twist, we discover -- via flashback -- that Elena actually met Damon first, not Stefan, on the night her parents died. She met Damon in the middle of the road, and at first, he mistook her for Katherine. They share a sweet moonlit conversation before Damon compels her to forget it ever happened. Had he not done that, perhaps things would have worked out differently between them.

Did anyone else think that underwater scene between Elena and Stefan was a little weird? It felt like Stefan gave in too easily, and there wasn't any real closure between the two. If he knew that she was really going to die, would he have left her like that?

When Elena was in the car with her dad, when she knew they were going to die, she mouthed the words, "I love you." But with Stefan, the man she loves more than anything else, there wasn't any sort final acknowledgement. Now Stefan has to deal with the guilt of letting Elena turn into a vampire, which means that we're all in store for a very angst-ridden Season 4.

Matt, being Elena's true confidant, decides to kidnap her and take her on a road trip, an hour away from Mystic Falls, to see Damon. Upon hearing of Klaus' ultimate demise, Elena, afraid that her friends will all die along with his entire bloodline, is forced to chose which direction to go in -- onward to Damon, or back in the other direction, to Stefan.

She ultimately choses to go back to Mystic Falls, calling Damon to tell him her final decision. She explains that Stefan came into her life at a time when she needed someone most, and she's in love with him. Once again, she has broken Damon's heart.

However, maybe the writers were trying to tell us that Stefan was the wrong choice because when Matt and Elena turn around and head toward home, Rebekah, avenging her brother's death, drives Matt off the bridge.
