Dear colleagues and friends,

I would like to share that today is a special day at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. I am deeply humbled to receive the 2026 UNESCO Carlos J. Finlay Prize for Microbiology and I would like to thank all my colleagues, mentors, collaborators, and friends who have been part of this journey.

https://www.unesco.org/en/articles/direk-limmathurotsakul-awarded-2026-unesco-carlos-j-finlay-prize-microbiology

The web content and my remarks will touch on melioidosis, and I hope they may, in some way, contribute to our shared goal of saving lives from this disease.

For anyone who would like to join online, here is the participation link:

https://unesco-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_OEMpQkWTTGeCukDQsAHJiA

Time: 5:20–6:20 PM (Paris time); 16 July 2026

A VDO recording of this event should also be available online later.

Kind regards,

Direk

This is great Aphaluck, and gives us all a fascinating and novel perspective on how we try to use the results of our research to reduce morbidity and mortality from melioidosis. It is particularly appropriate that this was published in the same week as Direk (aka ‘Dr Ek’) was awarded the Carlos J. Finlay Prize for doing just that!

Many thanks for bringing your paper to everyone’s attention and keep up the good work!
